LEADING AMERICAN JOCKEYS Basil James, the 17-year-old Sunnyside, Wash., rider, is the new leader of the American jockeys, with a record of 203 winners ridden since the first of the year. Last week it was apparent from the current form shown by James and Frank Chojnacki, the former leader, that the Washington youngster would inevitably take the lead. Chojnacki, riding at Tanforan, has been in somewhat of a slump, while James, despite the loss of his apprentice allowance a few months back, has been riding in, brilliant form at Sportsmans Park. Piloting six winners last week to boost his total past the 200 mark, James now has a margin of two winners on Chojnacki, who scored twice last week and also passed the 200 mark. With interest absorbed by the fight for leadership, the good riding of A. Gray was lost sight of, but the Idaho boy piloted twelve winners, double the number ridden by James, and sufficient to secure the weeks honors. James, however, not only leads in number of winners ridden, but also boasts of the highest percentage mark, .23, of any of the thirty leading American jockeys, whose records from January 1 up to and including the racing of last Saturday are as follows: Last Jockey.
