FAIRMOUNT PARK OPENS Memorial Day Handicap Headliner on Inaugural Program. Hold High Hopes for a Successful Spring Meeting at Modern Collinsville Track. COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 28.— Horse racing returns to this greater St. Louis area with the opening Monday of the thirty-one-day meeting of the Fairmount Park Jockey Club. Considerable interest is manifest in the impending season and the management of the track is looking forward to a splendid inaugural of this, the first spring session I here in several years. A successful fall meeting last year had much to do with the return of Fairmount j Park to the group of tracks operating at this time of the year. Whether the season will prove as popular with racing fans as was I the case last fall remains to be determined, but, judging from the keen enthusiasm evident at this time and heavy demands for opening day reservations, the Collinsville course may have a good season. EXTENSIVE PREPARATION Officials of the Fairmount Park Jockey Club, headed by T. D. Watkins and D. C. : Burnett, president and general manager, respectively, have been painstaking in preparing ■ for the operation of their modern I and finely appointed course and they have reason to believe that their efforts have not been in vain. Each program during the meeting, which will conclude with another holiday program on Monday, July 4, will embrace eight races, and the plan is to offer the largest possible number of contests over the longer distances, most popular with racegoers. Mondays program is headlined by the Memorial Day Handicap, which will be decided over six furlongs. It carries a ,200 purse and attracted its field from among horses three years old and upward. PLENTY OF MATERIAL Although the track is not crowded, ample racing material is on hand and among the many horses here are quite a few which are familiar to fans of this section. New performers also are plentiful, a number of stables having been shipped here for the first time. The riding talent compares favorably with that of other years and several young reins-men scheduled to perform in the saddle may rise to near stardom during the meeting. In past years Fairmount Park has produced several excellent jockey prospects. The plant has been entirely done over and everything is in ship-shape order for Mondays opening, for which a capacity crowd is forecast. Practically all boxes and reserved seats for Memorial Day have been sold and only a few late comers can be accommodated.
