! Here and There on the Turf Hants Victory Starts Inquiries Pimlico May Honor Grayson Bejshak Still Can Ride Santa Anita May Up Purses I I Victory of Hants at Belmont Park last week had horsemen inquiring about his she Strathleven . . . Hants is from Pooks Hill, a sister to Boojum, and was bred by Cornelius Whitney . . . She was one of three mares traded to Hal Price Headley, and that is how come Hants is racing for the Ken-tuckian . . . Strathleven was a son of Swyn-ford and Chiffre D Amour, by The Tetrarch, imported to this country by R. V. Dennison, of Wyoming, in 1929 . . . He never raced . . . Later Strathleven was taken to Kentucky by W. C. Goodloe, but was in service only a few years in the Blue Grass . . . He died in 1936 . . . Hants is about the speediest of the Headley two-year-olds shown so far but very high tempered ... If the Ken-tuckian develops another Menow it will be in the group of youngsters just shipped to trainer Duval Headley at Belmont Park . . . They were not hurried in spring training as were those of the Headley juveniles now racing. Pimlico will have to add three new stakes to its program to carry out the stake-a-day policy this autumn . . . Last fall the Maryland Jockey Club operated for ten days . . . This season the term is thirteen days . . . If new stakes are carded, one will honor the late Cary T. Grayson . . . He was a Pimlico director as well as being one of the best liked men in American racing . . . William duPont, Jr., recently inspected the Pimlico infield and predicted that it would be in condition for steeplechasing this fall . . . He will direct the installation of the jumps following the close of Delaware Park . . . The new grass in the re-graded infield is making a good stand and the turf should be solid enough in the fall to permit racing . . . Condition of Joseph E. Widener is vastly improved, but he probably will not be able to view any of the Belmont Park races before the end of the meeting. Johnny Bejshaks many friends were happy to see him score that double last week . . . The Baltimore veteran hasnt lost any of his ability to leave the post quickly nor his knowledge . . . Bull Lea is being freshened •up by Frank Kearns . . . His next important engagement is the Arlington Classic, but the Calumet Farm colt probably will be returned to campaigning a few weeks before that mid-July event . . . The son of Bull . Dog is not a Belmont Stakes eligible and | other opportunities at this time are limited, Continued on thirty-fifth pagej HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page.y hence the reason he is taking it easy . . . Jack McPherson has his eye on the important juvenile stakes to come . . . He believes Lady Nicotine will do until something better turns up . . . Her owner, Henry Guggenheim, is one person who derives much pleasure, even when his colors are close up . . . He has been one of the best buyers of yearlings in recent years and is gradually assembling a creditable stable. Every one of the seven partners in the syndicate which imported Blenheim II. to this country is satisfied with the foals by that 50,000 stallion ... No visitors are permitted to see Colonel Bradley simply because he has so many friends that simply because he has so many friends that his physicians are afraid his strength would be overtaxed seeing them all . . . He is steadily improving . . . Injuries suffered in the Santa Anita Handicap running prevented Top Row from being shipped to Kentucky to enter the stud . . . The A. A. Baroni star, however, is making his first season at the breeding establishment in California of Ed Janss . , . That enterprising young breeder has assembled a fine group of mares and the son of Peanuts is getting a fine chance In his first year at stud . . . Seen at Belmont Park last week was Tal Pendleton, who not so many years ago had a great deal of pleasure owning the horse Bar None. Can Charles H. Strub be contemplating a stake-a-day at Santa Anita Park next winter? . . . and a minimum purse of ,500? . . . and every week-end stake to be worth at least 0,000? . . . With no early two-year-old racing in California, Santa Anita will have room for many more older horsea . . . Announcement of the Los Angeles Turf Clubs plans for next winter may be expected in July or August ... Seabiscuit is being eased up in his training . . . But knees permitting, he will resume preparation in a week or so for the Massachusetts Handicap . . . He soon will go to Suffolk Downs, where the track suits much better than did Belmont Park . . . We are unable to vision a clash between Sea-biscuit and War Admiral in the Massachusetts . . . Either one or the other will be in the race . . . Nominations to all of Arlington Parks late closing stakes must be mailed by Wednesday midnight . . . They should attract most, if not all of the best horses in the country.
