SEVENTH FOR MAIN MAN Brilliant Respess Horse Takes Col. Alger Memorial Handicap. Fourth Victory of Year for Hildur Colt —Noble Boy Defeats Couleedam by Nose in Secondary Feature. DETROIT, Mich., May 30.— Main Man, consistent son of Hildur — Rose Mist, which races for Jerome B. Respess, scored his fourth straight victory of the year and his seventh straight, in the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap, ,000 feature of todays Memorial Day program at Detroits Fair Grounds. Tempestuous was second and Kings Heir third. The speedy bay colt conceded chunks of weight to his opponents when he carried 126 pounds to victory, Tempestuous carrying only 115 pounds and Kings Heir 108. It was a tremendously popular victory with the huge crowd, which gave the Respess star an ovation when he was brought back to the stand A crowd estimated at 15,000 took advantage of the ideal weather and the holiday to be present. The track was at its best and favorites held their own in a majority of the events. POPULAR VICTORY. Supporting the feature was the Seward Hotel Purse and this resulting in a popular victory enabled Eugene Fletcher to win his first race when he guided Bomar Stables Noble Boy to a nose triumph. T. D. Buhls Couleedam, which won the Welcome Purse on Saturday, was second and third went to Autograph. Seven started under allowance conditions with the winner, under 104 pounds, sprinting into a good lead during the opening quarter to hold a commanding advantage during the opening half mile. Nearing the final quarter. Couleedam moved into second position and during the final furlong, he and the winner put up a nip and tuck battle with Noble Boy proving the gamest. Couleedam tired in the final strides but was some two lengths before Autograph, which beat New Deal a length for third. New Deal raced wide throughout end showed little. Chicle T., fashionably bred daughter of Chicle and Gaiety Girl, provided a big surprise when she carried Henri Torrientes colors to a handy victory in the opening event. Neat Play was a length back of the winner, with Buff Ryan carrying off third honors, a length and a half farther back. Mr. Brook was fourth, with My Gretchen, a 2 to 1 choice, fifth. DIE HARD EASILY. Die Hard chalked up a score for the favorites and his third victory for the year when he was an easy winner of the three-quarters second race. The lightly regarded Continued on fortieth page. SEVENTH FORMAIN MAN Continued from first page. High Color was second and third went to Blagden. Miss Wise, which was a strongly supported second choice, weakened after holding fourth position for five furlongs. High Color had the most speed and led to b the last furlong, where the winner drove through on the inside to lead him by three Blengths at the end. But for inexperienced handling. Blagden probably would have been • stronger factor at the end. The novice riding of Donald Knight cost Mi- Edward McCuans Nessus victory in the thud race, at one mile and seventy yai ds, when the lad eased his mount when ih« timers flag was dropped at the end of a ■lie This enabled George Pruetts Portden, a h»avi!y supported choice, which led Nes-ius until nearing the final furlong of the one mile and seventy yards, to come again and gain the major award. Sister Jean, the geco id choice, was third. ■ i tain Henry made it two in a row when he k uned tne decision over Sweeping Dame In a eamara finish that climaxed the three-quai era fourth race.
