SUFFOLKS BIG CROWD Forty-Eight Thousand Attracted to Popular Boston Track. Heavy Play in Mutuels, With Record Figures of 04,307 — Hi Cliff Wins Best Race on Holiday Card. BOSTON, Mass., May 30.— Forty-eight j thousand racing fans turned out on Me-I morial Day, despite the lack of a stake attraction, to see Sheldon Fairbanks Hi Cliff ] win the three-quarters sprint that featured the program. The crowd had bet the tremendous sum of 07,772 through the fea-1 ture. which was fifth on the program, and j it appeared very likely that the Suffolk I Downs all-time record of 58,000, set last year on Memorial Day, would be bettered. The day was sunny and the track fast, but a cold wind was blowing. The final mutuel figures were 04,307. Hi Cliff came from behind the pace of Posterity in the Memorial Day Purse to beat that horse by two lengths, going away under ■ a perfect ride from Carol Bierman. It was the eleventh time this year that Posterity had finished second. Paragon Stables Family Friend took the show award, two and a half lengths of the runner-up, and War Scare, out in all the pace, was fourth. POSTERITY LEADS. Family Friend broke in front, but had a short-lived lead. Posterity was "rushed up at once by Donoso to show the way down the back stretch, with War Scare second, and Slow Motion a menacing third. Scheih was forced to go from the inside to the outside with the latter at the far turn and he dropped back steadily after that. As War Scare and Slow Motion began to j hail a hansom, Bierman moved with the ! Continued on fortieth page. SUFFOLKS BIG CROWD Continued from first page. winner. Hi Cliff was second at the far turn, but had headed Posterity by the time j j they straightened away for the battle down j . the home lane. Then Bierman had only to j ; shake his mount up a couple of times in the stretch to draw off from all rivals and finish the journey in LIIts. Hi Cliff was a willing and a running horse this afternoon. Family Friend, dropping far back after breaking fast, came gamely in the final furlong, but had no chance of j ; catching Posterity for the place. Slow Mo- j j tion will improve vastly off todays effort, in which he met interference. It was proved before and it was proved again today that it does not take War Admirals and Seabiscuits to pack em in to New England tracks. The feature was a very ordinary race, but the throng jammed every available foot of Suffolk Downs and the parking lot was taxed to capacity. . The estimate of 48,000 persons present was based upon actual turnstile count.
