ATTENDANCE OF 40,000 Jam Palatial Belmont Park to Witness Fine Decoration Day Card. Maeline Captures Juvenile Stakes — Charlotte Cirl Meets Defeat After Seven Straight Victories. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 30.— Maeline, undefeated two-year-old champion of the Miami winter season, but which failed to impress when well beaten in his Belmont Park debut on the opening day of the meeting, was a vastly improved horse for todays renewal of the Juvenile Stakes, racing five furlongs down the Widener straightaway in the dazzling time of :57% to defeat a good band of youngsters in decisive fashion. Closest to the gelded son of Higher and Kirk Lady, which performs under the banner of Dewitt Pages Maemere Farm, was Aerial Toy, beaten by three parts of a length for the major award of ,900 as he finished three lengths in front of Charlotte Girl, queen of her division at Hialeah Park and unbeaten in seven races. This gave the three principal monetary awards to a trio of Florida campaigners. A crowd estimated at 40,000 was present for the Memorial Day sport, being by far the largest of the meeting. Though the day was bright and sunny, the holiday competition brought scant joy to those speculatively inclined, favorites taking a lacing in the majority of events. Charlotte Girl was decidedly the best fancied of those in the two-year-old dash, going to the post at 7 to 5, with the successful gelding a 7 to 1 chance. The second of the days stakes, the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap at two miles, provided a lesser upset for form players when Thomas Hitchcocks Annibal took down the principal prize of ,895, with the highly favored Greentree entry of Sailor Beware and Jungle King being unplaced. STRAIGHT COURSE HANDICAPS. Charlotte Girl, making her initial appearance down the straightaway, may have been handicapped by this. Shes a sluggish beginner and did not fall into her best stride until the final three-sixteenths of a mile Then she finished in her usual courageous fashion, but her bid was too late, as she never could get close to the leading pair. The score of Annibal in the Corinthian was the third in the history of the event for Thomas Hitchcock, Bangle winning for the veteran in 1929, and Darkness scoring under his green and gold tasseled silks the following season. A perfect ride by Rigan McKinney played no small part in the triumph of the French-bred gelding, a son of Chubasco and Alliance. At the end he had speed in reserve as he passed the judges three lengths in advance of the rapidly-closing National Anthem, with Red Rain Continued on fortieth page. j j . j j ; j ; j j ATTENDANCE OF 40,000 Continued from first page. also finishing well, to be another length an f a half away. From a time standpoint, the effort was nothing to talk about, when the five-year-old finished in 3:46%. The winner running coupled with Yemasee, receded to 3-to-l at post time, after opening a 9-to-f. favorite. The heavy money was /or the Greentree entry of Sailor Beware and Jungle King, which was backed into 3-to-2 favoritism, after opening at 2-to-l, their appearance being responsible for the presence of Mi . Payne Whitney, owner of the Oreen1.ree establishment, the lady being at the course for the first time this year. There came a dead heat in the American Flag Handicap, a gallop of a mile and a six teenth in which Cleaveland Putnams Moon Side and W. J. Hirschs Mosawtre were so closely lapped they could not be separated. This was the sixth offering and it was marred when Wm. H. Gallaghei s Rudie whs I left at the post. Two lengths back of tne * battling pair at the finish camp Old Nassau, to take third from Grand Slam.
