BELMONT AND OAKS WORKS Creole Maid and Jolly Tar in Trial Gallops at Belmont Park — Handcuff Goes Mile. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 30.— Preston Burch brought two of the top three-year-olds he is training for Walter M. Jeffords at Belmont Park yesterday morning when he had both Jolly Tar and Creole Maid under saddle. Creole Maid bears the silks of Mrs. Jeffords and she is making ready for the Coaching Club American Oaks, while Jolly Tar, a brother to Matey is heading for the Belmont to be run Saturday. The pair went along together for a mile and a furlong in 1:59, and they were simply breezing all the way. The Oaks is a feature of the Thursday racing and Creole Maid seems to be fit and ready while Jolly Tar looms up as a worthy candidate for the mile and a half of the old Belmont. Handcuff, the daughter of Whichone and Tenes, in the Brookmeade Stable and a purchase from C. V. Whitney is another of the Coaching Club American Oaks candidates, brought out yesterday at Belmont Park. Her task was a mile and not asked for speed she stepped in 1:44. One other move during the week-end was when Ogden Phipps Magic Hour, a candi- A date for the Belmont, went along for a mile M and a quarter in 2:16 at Aqueduct Sunday. The son of Sortie and One Hour was breezing all the way and he finished out the gallop in a manner to indicate that he is capable of racing a mile and half in top company.
