TEN STAR THREE-YEAR-OLDS IN CHESAPEAKE TODAY Post of Favorite May Lie Between Gilded Knight and Challedon Porters Mite, Volitant, Impound, Ariel Toy and Day Off Challenging Supremacy of More Highly Regarded Rivals 5,000 Stake Havre Feature HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 21. Ten of the foremost three-year-olds in training in this sector have been named for the twentieth running of the historic Chesapeake Stakes, to be decided at the Havre de Grace course of the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association tomorrow. The Special, a gallop of one and one-sixteenth miles, has been looked upon as a test for eligibles for the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but the addition of 5,000 added money by the host association forces high regard for the classic in its own right. The quality of those named for this years renewal adds to the importance of the running. Included in the list of the entrants are several of the early choices in the future books for the run- nmgs of the Derby and Preakness. The ten include an entry, Challenge, which will carry the silks of the Be-lair Stud, and Gilded Knight, Wheat-ley Stable representative. Three Chesapeake winners have gone on to win renewals of the Kentucky Derby and one has accounted for the Preakness. The Derby winners were Whiskery in 1927, Cavalcade in 1934 and War Admiral in 1937. War Admiral is the lone winner of the Chesapeake to win the Preakness. FAVORITISM DIVIDED. In tomorrows running of the Chesapeake favoritism is likely to rest between Wheatley Stables Gilded Knight and W. L. Branns Challedon. Gilded Knight earns his favoritism as a result of having the distinction of being the only horse to defeat El Chico, which is not among the entrants. El Chico Vvas last years two-year-old champion and rules as one of the favorites for the Derby. Challedon won three consecutive Futurities as a two-year-old and is well fancied in the Derby. He is the likeliest of Maryland horses to stand a chance in the history of the running of the Derby and a victory in his home state is not at all improbable. Challedon will carry top weight of 122 pounds in the Chesapeake. Closest to the high weight in the matter of poundage come W. E. Boeings Porters Mite and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Impound. Both are asked to carry 119 pounds. Porters Mite flashed to fame when he ran to a new worlds record for six and one-half furlongs and then went on to win last years Belmont Futurity. Since then he showed prowess in his races on the coast. Impound is a spotty sort of racer, but on his peak performances he rates a chance with this field. He was third in the Santa Anita Derby. INTEREST IN VOLITANT. Keen interest is certain to center about the appearance of Saratoga Stables Volitant. The consistent son of Display and Flighty Anna has been no worse than second in eight starts. He was in that position at the end of the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah Park last winter, finishing in the wake of the doughty Technician. His two-year-old Mary. Continued on thirty-second page. TEN STAR THREE-YEAR-OLDS IN CHESAPEAKE TODAY Continued from first page. Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap at Laurel land record is impressive, for he won the last fall. Of the others in the Chesapeake, Hugh W. Jacksons Ariel Toy and Greentree Stables i Day Off appear the most formidable. The former accounted for the Arkansas Derby and the latter was victor in the Louisiana Derby. The other three entrants are Belair Studs Challenge, Starmount Stables Shambles and Millsdale Stables Sun Lover. Victory by any one of these would be in the nature of a surprise. ! The management of the track, taking full cognizance .of the excellent field brought together in the Chesapeake by racing secretary Charles J. McLennan, has arranged for additional transportation facilities for the patrons, and Herman A. M. Frank will have a full staff of mutuel employes on hand to handle the wagering. i I i
