PREPARE FOR SPRING SESSION Wheeling Downs Attracts Attention of Horsemen Throughout Country. Managing Director Brennan Confident Trl-State Track Will Stage the Best Meeting in Its History. WHEELING, W. Va., April 21. With the advent of a new northern racing season, preparations for the annual spring meeting of the sport of kings at Wheeling Downs, the modern plant on the south end of Wheeling Island, are moving at a rapid pace. Edward J. Brennan, managing director, revealed today that the calibre of sport . scheduled for a sixteen-day period, starting May 27 and ending June 17, will be even finer than last fall when tri-state district turf fans enjoyed their greatest session of the sport. Brennan stated that Wheeling Downs has altracted the attention of horsemen all over the country and reservations for stall space are expected to test the capacity of the 400-stall plant. Horsemen who have wintered on Ohio, Maryland and Pennsylvania farms are rapidly advising of their intentions to ship to Wheeling, and in addition stall space has been requested from owners who campaigned in Florida, New Orleans and Cuba during the winter. The eastern horse farms will also provide many fresh horses for the Downs season, some of which are currently seen under silks at Bowie. IN FINE CONDITION. Today the Wheeling oval was in fine condition, with the winter rises of the Ohio River inflicting no damage to the racing strip. Track superintendent "Bee" Pappert said this week that the frequent rains have benefited the course tremendously, and he expects to have the strip in excellent condition with the arrival of the first runners at the end of this month. The condition book is now being prepared by racing secretary William M. Shewbridge, and it will be distributed to horsemen in the near future. Last fall, Shewbridges condition books gave Wheeling Downs its finest fields in history and won the praise of horsemen and fans alike. Announcement was made today that the Service League of Wheeling, Junior League organization, will again sponsor membership in the West Virginia Turf Club, the swank society organization, whose membership is comprised of social leaders of the tri-state area. The board of governors of the West Virginia Turf Club consists of Thomas M. Bloch, chairman; Malcolm T. Brice, H. W. Gee, Charles N. Hancher, Herbert A. May, W. Glessner Paull, H. Dewey Quarrier, John O. Rankin and George S. Weaver.
