COSGRAVE STAR, LIPTON, DIES TORONTO, Ont, April 21. The Cosgrave Stable suffered a severe loss in the sudden death of the good Canadian-bred Lipton, at Woodbine Park Sunday night. The horse contracted a cold on the way here from Miam.i which resulted in contraction of the muscles of the heart, the complications resulting in his death. Dr. J. H. Black was in almost constant attendance of the racer throughout Sunday, and it was not thought that his illness was of a serious nature, but nothing could be done for him when the heart became affected. Lipton was a seven-year-old chestnut gelding bred by the estate of W. E. Bulmer, and a son of Bachelor Skipper Briny Breezes, by Black Toney. He first raced under the colors of Ryland H. New and won five of his eight starts at that age. He was among the favorites for the Kings Plate of 1935, as a three-year-old, but a foot ailment robbed him of his opportunity in the Guineas and he did not get to the races until late in the season. He was purchased from Mr. New by Hugh S. Wilson as a four-year-old in 1936, and again changed owners as a five-year-old in 1937, when the Cosgrave Stable secured him at private sale. This was his best year, the gelding winning nine of fourteen starts and finishing second once and third once, for earnings of ,800.
