EL CHICOTRIES AGAIN Stands Out Among Horses Named for Stuyvesant Handicap. c Ziegler Star Must Win Today to Remain Contender for Honors in the Kentucky Derby. JAMAICA, N. Y., April 21. El Chico will be the main man at the Jamaica race course this afternoon as the Metropolitan Juckcy Club offers its first double stakes program of the spring session, William Zieglers juvenile champion of 1938 being slated to bat tie with eight three-year-old rivals in the Stuyvesant Handicap. The presence of the John P. Grier La Chica colt, despite the fact that he lost a nose decision to Gilded Knight last Saturday, makes this decidedly the outstanding race of the day. He will carry top weight of 126, conceding from ten to twenty-one pounds to his opposition, but looks all over a short-priced choice, nevertheless. Overnight El Chico appeared a 1 to 2 chance, which, while short enough, still is considerably better than the 1 to 7 of a week back. If El Chico is beaten in the Stuyvesant, hell very definitely drop out of the Kentucky Derby picture. That he will default seems unlikely, for hes an attraction and as such will draw many people to the course this afternoon. REPORTED ON EDGE. In general opinion, the Ziegler coit would have triumphed in his seasons debut had Wall whipped him out to the finish. Today hell be a considerably tighter horse and therell be no reason for sparing the rod. If El Chico is the racer his adherents main tain, he should have no trouble running off with principal Stuyvesant honors. In fact, there should be no need for the whip. The Rosedale, a five furlongs dash for filly juveniles, has drawn a slightly lighter field than the three-year-old feature, with half a dozen named to go. This appears a more open event on paper, with no lass of considerable quality among the sextet. Pilot Biscuit, stablemate of El Chico and a winner over the track in her lone start, shapes up as the public choice. William Ziegler, Jr.s, three-year-old went a mile through mud at Belmont Park on Thursday and this caused many to rate him as doubtful in todays six furlongs. He finished that eight furlongs in 1:40 with speed to spare after stepping the half in :47 and three-quarters in 1:12. The move says its a cinch he wont be lacking in condition this afternoon. OUR MATT STARTER. Our Matt once more is slated to accompany his more illustrious stable comr anion to the post. The son of Our General was a good winner at Santa Anita last winter but showed nothing in his last Saturdays outing. However, hes done all asked in training since that occasion and an improvement is anticipated. T. M. Dorsett, winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last fall, on juvenile form is the lad El Chico will have to beat. However, the son of Cohort was stricken in New Orleans not so many weeks back and recent training at Aqueduct has been Continued on thirty-second page. EL CHICOJTRIES AGAIN Continued from first page. nothing to enthuse over. There is a strong chance the racer from the Crescent City may need conditioning such as can be gained only in competition. Track form suggests Sea Captain and Star Runner will go mighty well. The first named was third to Gilded Knight and El Chico last Saturday and then came back to vhip the Kiev three-year-old. The latter had a muddy track to favor him that afternoon, but it was his seasons first and he should improve. Mud also would make Entracte a factor, though on a fast track he doca not look so good. NO SOFT SPOT. Highscope, a home-bred in the George Widener stable, is picking no soft spot for the seasons debut while the winter campaigner, Johns Heir, seems over his head. Thellusson is a nice maiden but this hardly appears the graduation occasion. Pilot Biscuit should start the Ziegler dou-bye in the Rosedale which precedes the Stuy-vesant on the program. The daughter of Hard Tack did not turn in a remarkable effort on the opening day to gradaute but she came back with a half in :48 and appears of the improving order. Shell have no easy task on her hands as shes facing, in Fair Chant and Ranchos Girl, a pair of well seasoned fillies.
