Noble Impulse Lowers Pimlicos Track Mark to Earn Preakness Starting Berth Oglebay Homebred Crosses Wire Five Lengths Before Blue Hills in Survivor PIMLICO. Baltimore, Md., May 9.— Crispin Oglebays Noble Impulses track-record-breaking effort in todays Survivor Stakes, earned the homebred son of Bull Dog and Uvira II. a starting role in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. The bay colt took the track in the one mile and a sixteenth fixture to register an easy five lengths triumph over Brookmeade Stables Blue Hills. He was timed in 1:42, two-fifths of a second better than the previous mark set by Royal Governor last fall. Edward Laskers Hedgewood was third, beaten a half length for the place and he was two and one-half lengths clear of Charles E. Tuttles Double Brandy, the favorite, in the field of six three-year-olds. King Ranchs Swap Out and Sylvester W. Labrot Jr.s Taran were fifth and sixth in that order, which practically eliminated the pair for a starting role in Saturdays classic. The victory was the first for Noble Im- ► pulse in three starts this season and the manner in which he picked up top weight of 119 pounds to score in easy fashion stamps him a strong factor in the Preakness. His Cleveland owner picked up ,655 by his colts victory in the twelfth running of the Survivor, which was witnessed by a crowd of 11,234. He was third choice in the wagering and paid 2.00. Noble Impulse shot to the front at the break to easily open a three-length lead in the first quarter mile. At this stage, jockey Bobby Martin took hold of him and rated him superbly. He maintained an advantage of two lengths at the half-mile marker over Blue Hills with Hedgewood running in third position. Double Brandy was next in line followed by Taran and Swap Out. Noble Impulses mile of 1:35% was evidently too much for his rivals and entering the stretch he was still under a tight hold while maintaining his advantage. Blue Hills came again through the stretch to take the place from Hedgewood as Double Brandy gave the tussle up. Swap Out and Taran were never in the race. The latter was virtually eliminated when he dwelt at the start.
