Alpine Belle Draws Off To Six-Length Triumph Takes Track at Start and Never Is Headed in Thistle Down Dash RANDALL PARK, North Randall, Ohio, May 9. — Alpine Belle, a heretofore unraced five-year-old daughter of Bel Aethel and Alpenstock II., took the track at the beginning of the five and one -half furlongs Twenty Grand Purse and after a brief challenge from /.. and R. Craigs Wild Heiress, drew away under pressure in the stretch run to win by six lengths. Wild Heiress held on to her place position to be a length and a half before C. Galliotos Chilaboy, while George Y. Bookers favored Milk Dance came from behind to be fourth. W. H. Sharp saddled Alpine Belle in the interest of his wife, and veteran reinsman Kenneth Robertson guided her to the upset victory, which netted the lucky ticket holders 8.20. Time for the event over a fast but deeply cushioned racing strip was a creditable 1:06%. A small gathering, estimated at 4,500, attended this second afternoon of racing of the Thistle Down meeting. The earlier events also witnessed several upsets, with jockey James Baird the saddle star of the afternoon, bringing home the winners of the second and fourth races. The weather called for topcoats, as a brisk wind swept down from Lake Erie and heavy clouds blanketed the sky. Jockey Robertson was taking no chances with Alpine Belle in the Twenty Grand, and kept her to her task from beginning to end. She broke swiftest from the gate and quickly opened a clear lead. Wild Heiressf moved forward determinedly to challenge midway the turn, but after reaching the ultimate winner, quickly weakened and could offer no further resistance. When joined by Wild Heiress, Robertson unleashed his whip with a vengeance and dropped Alpine Belle into an ever increasing lead despite swerving repeatedly in the final stretch run.
