Big Influx to Homewood For Lincoln Fields Meet Woolfords Delegate May Start In Crete Handicap Opening Day WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., May 9.— Although less than 200 thoroughbreds were quartered last week at the local stabling area and at Lincoln Fields, where the overflow will be handled during the impending Lincoln Fields meeting to be held here, beginning May 16, a steady influx is beginning to converge on these two courses and before the end of the week only a comparatively few stalls will be unoccupied. The Lincoln Fields Racing Association, under the helm of Peter J. ODonnell, picks up immediately after Sportsmans Park ends next Saturday. The former Chicago turf reporter announces that the general class of competition is expected to be better than ever. "Of course, several of the larger stables now running at Churchill Downs will wait until the Louisville meeting ends," ODonnell said, "but there is only six days conflict between the two meetings, which should mean that the meeting will pick up in the better grade of horses as it progresses." ODonnell says most of the leading sprinters in the Middle West have been nominated for the 0,000 Crete Handicap, six-furlong fixture that is to headline opening day festivities. One that is regarded as a definite starter is the Woolford Farms Delegate, a speedy gelding who has been among the outstanding sprinters of the country for the last two years. Delegate was a competitor in last springs Crete, but failed to show to his best advantage. However, in subsequent starts at the Lincoln Fields he was well nigh invincible. The five-year-old son of Maeda— Brides Veil has been training to the satisfaction of his conditioner, John A. Nerud, at Hawthorne, where the Woolford Farm unit is stabled while campaigning at Sportsmans Park. The flashy chestnut started only four times during the winter, mainly, it is presumed, because it was Neruds desire to keep out of Coaltowns way. But in that quartet of races he emerged victorious in three and managed to net one stakes victory, the Seminole Handicap. Delegate has benefited from a short freshening up period since his easy Florida stint.
