Comment on Derby Pace BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., -N. Y., May 9. — Most of the "Derby riders interviewed at Belmont Park today expressed surprise at the fractional times for the early portion of the race. Eddie Arcaro and Ted Atkinson, who rode Olympia and Capot, found it hard to believe that the half mile had been covered in :462/s and six furlongs in 1:12%, as they set and forced the pace. Atkinson said that he doubted if he would have made less use of Capot even had Olympia not been in the race, as the Menow colt is inclined to sulk when taken under restraint. "Ponder went by me like a wild horse," Ted said, "and my horse was still going easily then, though he kind of fell apart in the last sixteenth." The Canadian-born rider is of the opinion that the Derby should have improved Capot considerably as he had refused to work adequately for the Churchill Downs classic.
