Brown Rover Triumphant In Derby Trial at Epsom Woodward Colt Emulates Feat of His Stablemate, Black Tarquin LINGFIELD PARK, England, May 9 Reuters. — William Woodwards Ameri-. can-bred colt, Brown Rover, emulated the feat of his stablemate, Black Tarquin, last year by winning the Derby Trial Stakes run over a mile and a half here Saturday afternoon from the Maharajah of Barodas Jai Hind, third choice for the Epsom Derby. Brown Rover, running for the first time this season, was offered at 50 to 1 for the Derby before the race, while Jai Hind was supported at 10 to 1 in anticipation of an easy win today. On todays showing, the prices on these two horses are likely to fluctuate. Brown Rover, starting at 11 to 2, proved himself a good stayer and Australian jockey Billy Cook brought him home for an easy five-length victory. Jai Hind started at 1 to 4, while Setarah, a 33-to-l outsider, was three lengths away in third place. Brown Rover led into the stretch two furlongs from home, where Jai Hind went into the lead, but the American colt came on and regained command a furlong out and won drawing away. Brown Rovers trainer, Capt. Cecil Boyd-Rochfort, said after the race, "He is really a good stayer, that is why he had been beaten previously over a mile." No jockey has been engaged to ride him in the Derby, but it is possible Edgar Britt may have the mount. Charlie Smirke said of Jai Hind, "I just headed Brow Rover a quarter-mile from home, but my horse [failed to go through with it."
