Eddie Eddie Sue Sue Furnishes Furnishes Artful Artful Upset; Upset; Grecian Grecian Queen Queen Whips Whips Canadiana Canadiana Sails Home Clear In Gazelle Stakes Taylor Filly Steals Big Lead But Wilts in Final Furlong; • Hows Tricks Weary Eighth By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 24.— E. P. Taylors Canadiana made a valiant effort to steal the fifty-eighth running of the Gazelle Stakes today, opening up an eight-length lead throughout most of the mile and a sixteenth, but the Canadian invader tired badly in the stretch and Mrs. Ben F. Whitakers Coaching Club American Oaks winner, Grecian Queen, sailed past her in the stretch to triumph by a length and a half. Belair Studs Sabette was almost two lengths farther back in third place and nearly three lengths before HowelL E. Jacksons Ballerina. Greentree Stables favored Hows Tricks was unprepared at the start, moved up to fifth place in the backstretch, then finished a weary eighth in the field of 10 three-year-old fillies. Grecian Queen, who was conceding eight pounds to eight of her nine rivals, was second choice to Hows Tricks with the crowd of 18,728 and paid .60 after getting the distance in 1:45%. The Gazelle was the fifth victory in seven starts this year for Grecian Queen and the 0,950 she netted brought her earnings to 75,425, with a record of 10 triumphs in 22 starts in two seasons. The daughter of Heliopolis — Qbania, by Questionnaire, was unplaced in the Acorn Stakes for her only bad race this year, had won the Prioress Stakes and CCA Oaks, and finished third in the Delaware Oaks, while last year she won the Marguerite and Demoiselle. Her victory today was Eric Guerins seventh in as many tries on Grecian Queen. Guerins Comment After the race, Guerin said that he had been a little worried about Canadianas eight-length lead, but added, "If Id gone after her any sooner, I might have just set it up for somebody else." Dave Gorman, who rode the Canadian Queens Plate winner, said that he could not have restrained Canaiiiana any more than he did without damaging her chances. The daughter of Chop Chop reeled off fractions of :23%, ATYs and 1:11%. She was staggering and had, been headed by Grecian Queen as they reached the mile in 1:38%. Hows Tricks appeared to have been held in the gate by an assistant starter, who was almost dragged along with the filly as she tried to come out when George Cassidy Continued on Page Forty-Four Grecian Queen Whips j Canadiana in Gazelle Invader Unable to Hold Sizable Lead Over Shifty Whitaker Fflly Continued from Page One pressed his button. The favorite, who was wearing a one-cup blinker to help her negotiate the turns, moved up willingly, but the effort to regain the lost ground left her with nothing for the final three furlongs. As Canadiana .shot into a wide lead coming away from the gate, Gainsboro Girl, Ballerina and Grecian Queen were closest in pursuit, while Hows Tricks was "absolutely," but began to move up rapidly as she rounded the turns into the backstretch. Canadiana widened her lead in the run down the far side, though Gorman was keeping her on a snug hold. Ballerina moved into second place, followed by Grecian Queen as Gainsboro Girl began to fall back and Hows Tricks moved up steadily, passing Sabette on the rail. Milspal, Script, Ming Yellow and Queens Moon followed. Canadiana continued to lead around the turns and into the stretch, appearing to be going very easily, while Grecian Queen moved to Ballerina at the head of the home lane and quickly dominated that filly. Guerin then set the Heliopolis filly down for the final drive and, though she was still two lengths behind the Canadian filly at the eighth pole, it was obvious that she was going to get the job done. Canadiana began to switch her tail and lurch under Gormans whip, and was only able to offer token resistance at the end. Sabette turned in a fair race,, though never threatening the first two, while Ballerina tired badly. Ming Yellow closed slowly to be fifth, followed by Script, Queens Moon and Hows Tricks.
