Favored Bubbley Runs Fourth] To Fred W.Hooper Homebred] Arab Actress Runner-Up in 4 Arlington Stake; Duntreath Colorbearers Score Double By J. J. MURPHY ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 24. — The running of the 5,000 added Artful Stakes here today brought about an upset when Eddie Sue, a rank outsider from the stable of Fred W. Hooper, was the winner, and the highly regarded Bubbley, representing Calumet Farm, could do no better than f jnish fourth. As the race was run in the creditable time of 1:09%, Eddie Sue was clearly the best, and her winning margin was almost two lengths. Second place went to Arab Actress, winner of two events at the recently closed Lincoln Fields meeting, and third place was taken by Good Call. Eddie Sue, whose last success was in an allowance race at Hawthorne last autumn and who was beaten four lengths by Arab Actress on her last attempt, was ridden by Don Scurlock and paid 8.40. Favorite Never in Hunt The race was at six furlongs and the attention of the public was showered on Bubbley and Arab Actress, with Bubbley a slight choice. Arab Actress put up opposition of sorts, but Bubbley was never in the hunt, although going fairly well at the finish. Eddie Sue, who was alert at the start, was never headed. In the early stages she was challenged for the leadership by Emardee, winner of the Jasmine Stakes Continued on Page Forty-Three ► I nu ! inn n mil mi mi L | FRED W. Neither Bubbley or Arab Actress seemed to have any serious excuse, albeit BUbbley was between horses in the early running. However, Eddie Arcaro is smart enough not to be seriously hampered and he might have been rating her to orders. If he was, he made his move too late. Arab Actress was but two lengths off the leader in the first quarter and was beaten almost that distance. A crowd of 13,959 saw the race in which the net value to the winner was 0,075. It was the second straight time that Scurlock had been the winning rider in the affair, he having piloted Jo Pilot last year. Bubbley failed where horses from the same stable, Good Blood, Bewitch, and Two Lea, each were winners in the seven-year history of the event. Another track record was established when The Eagle, making his first appear ance nere, ran one and one-sixteenth miles on the turf in 1:42% to clip one-fifth second from the old standard held by Volcanic. The Eagle, owned by Duntreath Farm and ridden by Al Popara, beat Vantage by a scant nose in a hard stretch drive, with Hierarch being third, and Iceberg n., who was about equal choice with Vantage, finishing fourth. The Eagle paid 5.00. Eddie Arcaro rode two of the first five winners and each was favored. He piloted Uncle Tom, a three-year-old colt, to success over a small field in the third, and came back to win the fifth with First Refusal. Arcaro rated both his mounts to a nicety. Fa3t Buck was second to Uncle Tom and First Refusal beat out Black Stream. The Daily Double paid 0.20 when Lock Out came from last place to beat Publick in the second, and Donke Serenade took the opener. Young John Ralph Adams was on Lock Out, and Paul Bailey rode Donkey Serenade. The latter was well played, while Lock Out was backeU down from his opening price. Free Agent, a son of Spy Song, came within two-fifths of a second of equaling the track record when he easily trimmed a large band of maiden two-year-old colts and geldings in the fourth. The eolt, owned by Harvey Fruehauf and .ridden by Al Popara, had good speed from the start and drew away in the last eighth. Boiler Plate was second and Two Fisted, guided by Arcaro, finished third, with the favored Hoosier Havoc, fourth.
