Arab Arab Actress Actress Tallies Tallies in in Misty Misty Isle; Isle; Plan Plan Fast Fast Work Work for for Dancer Dancer Today Today Proves Best Filly Of Midwest Area Homebred of Mrs. H.J.Damm Shows Way at Washington to Lillal, Mimi Mine in Sprint By J. J. MURPHY WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., Aug. 19. Arab Actress, queen of the three-year-old fillies in the Chicago area this season, raced from behind here this afternoon to win the eighth running of the Misty Isle Handicap going away. Packing topweight of 124 pounds, and ably handled by jockey W. M. Cook, Arab Actress, owned by Mrs. Henry J. Damm, of Indianapolis, flashed down the outside in the stretch to pass Lillal and Fulvous, the early leaders, and draw out in the final 30 yards. The winners margin was one and one-quarter lengths, with Lillal finishing a head in front of the fast closing Mimi Mine, who ran her best race of the season. Eddie Sue, who defeated Arab Actress in the Artful at Arlington Park, was fourth. Arab Actress was a lukewarm favorite over Fulvous as the field of 12 left the starting gate. Lillal, racing for the first time in the silks of Warner Jones, Jr., who recently purchased her from Tom Piatt, went to the front at once, and with jockey Ken Church sending her along nicely, drew clear of Eddie Sue, who was in second place. After going three-sixteenths, Fulvous moved up , to be the chief contender, and after they had entered the stretch Fulvous began to gain. Arab Actress meanwhile had been firmly entrenched in third place and she moved on the outside. Lillal Bears Out At midstretch the leading trio were well in advance of the others and it was at this stage that Lillal bore out slightly and Fulvous appeared to be bothered slightly. Arab Actress, in full stride, headed Fulvous about this time and the latter began to drop back, leaving the race between Lillal and the eventual winner. Church hustled Lillal in an effort to keep her going but Arab Actress was simply "too much filly." Mimi Mine staged a fine run in the middle of the track to be third, while Eddie Sue, although unable, to keep up with the speed, went in fairly consistent fashion. Arab Actress ran the seven-furlong distance of the Misty Isle in 1:24 and paid .40. Her success was viewed by a crowd of 16,512 in rather pleasant weather, and she earned 3,675 by her victory. Mother Morris, an experienced mare, and Abolish, a young gelding who was making his first start, combined to make for a 51.20 Daily Double. Mother Morris, a Continued on Page Forty-Three Arab Actress Victorious En Misty Isle Handicap . Playman and Second Story, respective favorites in the first and second, were each unplaced. Big Upset was the first favorite of the afternoon to register when she took the third event with ease from Fays Reaper, an outsider, who was ridden, by a first-time appearing jockey named Frank Smothers. Big Upset was ridden by Layton Risley, and the boy sent her through an opening on the inside of the pace-setting Suthern Accent in the stretch to draw out. The fourth race engaged a dozen horses to race six furlongs on the turf, and Son-Rock led all the way to eke out a narrow win over Masterwind. The latter was close to the leader early and came again after bearing out on the turn. He would have been the winner in a couple of more strides. Le Coq Hardi, an imported runner, was the favorite, but was never in the hunt. W. M. Cook was on the winner. Eddie Arcaro booted home the winner in the fifth race on the favored Ail Mail, who appeared much the best. Steak Bone made the pace, but Arcaro sent Air Mail up on the outside in the stretch and the gelding won by three and one-half lengths going away. Steak Bone had no trouble saving second place. Alifair, a Papa Redbird filly whose only prior start was a winning one at Arlington Park, was a well-played favorite in the sixth and was up in time to best Black Main and Jenjay. Jenjay set out as if to make a runaway of it and was three lengths in front at the last sixteenth, then Alifair came fast on the outside under hard urging by Don Wagner to be up in time. The distance was five and one-half furlongs.
