.A Sabette Popular Victress in Diana Outruns Canadiana By Four Lengths Belair Studs Daughter of Alsab Is Ready to Vie With Grecian Queen in Alabama By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 19. Belair Studs Sabette charged to a popular triumph in the 15th running of the Diana Handicap here todayA running down E. P. Taylors pacemaking Canadiana .in the stretch to score by four lengths with a bit of speed in reserve. It was another five lengths back to F. Eugenes Dixons Dine-wisely, who led C. V. Whitneys stretch-running Ming Yellow by a half length. - Jess Higley rode Sabette, who returned .30 and. completed a stakes triple for trainer Jim Fitzsimmons, who saddled Vul-cania and Busanda to win the last two editions of the mile and a furlong: fixture. Sabette required 1:52 for the journey, exactly the same time Vulcania needed and four-fifths faster than Busanda ran it last year. The chestnut daughter of Alsab Segula, by Johnstown, added 1,250 to her earnings, giving her a seasons total of 4,875 with three victories in 13 starts. She had won two races and ,605 last year. The Diana was Sabettes first stakes victory, but she had finished a nose behind Grecian Queen, who she will meet again in the Alabama next week, in the Coaching Club American Oaks, third behind Grecian Queen and Canadiana in the Gazelle, and Second to The Queen in the Monmouth Oaks. Canadiana Opens Up Lead Quickly The crowd of 14,438 was about 1,000 less than the equivalent day last year, but topped the 1951 throng. Though Valadium was first out of the gate in the Diana, Canadiana quickly opened her usual wide lead and was five lengths before Homemade as they sped down the backstretch, with Nothirdchance a close third. Sabette was several lengths farther back in fourth place and stayed there to the three-furlong pole, when Higley asked her to get moving and she responded at once. Valadium attempted a bid at the same time, but quickly dropped back to last place, while Ming Yellow was still a distant last, preceded by Dinewisely. Canadiana came into the stretch three lengths in the van, but Sabette was running strongly on the outside and as the pacemaker began to falter at the furlong pole, it was obvious that William Woodwards silks were going to triumph again. Sabette took command a couple of strides past the eighth pole and the Alsab filly drew away under the mildest sort of urging. Though obviously weary, Canadiana was not threatened for second money. Dinewisely finished well on the rail, while Ming Yellow came from nowhere on the extreme outside. Alfred G. Vanderbilts Hail Fellow was packed down to odds-on in the fifth race, Continued on Page Forty-Six Sabette Registers Popular Victory in Diana Handicap Continued from Page Three but stumbled to his knees twice in the post parade, spilling Ted Atkinson the second time. During the running, he went to the front at the start, but lurched no-ticably when challenged by Joe W. Browns Single 0. and succumbed by almost a length. The favorite stumbled again after the finish- and nearly went down. Ovie Scurlock rode Single O., ason of King Dorsett Lhara, by Pharamond IX, who paid 0.00 and required 1:14 for the six furlongs. Christiana-Stables Bertie was a distant third before Llangollen Farms Ordained.
