VanBerg Enters Hazel Park Couplings In Rock X. and Jockeys1 Guild Purses Cajac, Fine Fiddle Team Up 1 In Former and Mock Battle, Big Hearted Vie in Latter ! By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent HAZEL PARK, Mich., Aug. 19. The Rock X Purse, a six furlongs condition race for three-year-olds and upward, and the Jockeys Guild Purse at one mile for horses from similar age divisions, will cofeature a splendid program tomorrow afternoon at this colorful near-Motor City course. The Rock X drew an overnight field of eight shifty sprinters, scheduled to race in seven interests while the Jockeys Guild attracted seven entrants,, representing six interests. Marion H. VanBerg, perennial leading trainer at Wolverine State meetings, will send out an entry in the Rock X in the speedy Cajac, one of the highweights under the allowance terms at 120 pounds, and Fine Fiddle, who gets in the sprint with 109 pounds. Cajac, a five-year-old Foray Array-sired gelding, is a double winner this year and he won the three-quarters mile Ann Arbor Purse at tho Detroit Race Course June 4 in 1:10. In his last Hazel Park outing, the VanBerg gelding displayed high speed in the T-V Guide Purse before bowing to : Lonoke Flash, Bated Breath and Witch Way. Fine Fiddle, a four-year-old filly, the get of First Fiddle and Jamesina, also visited the winners ring on two occasions during the 1953 season and she has been a keen contender in all of her Chicago and Michigan engagements. Fine Fiddle, a versatile racer on muddy or dry footing, trimmed a quick band here inaugural day in a six furlongs overnight event, which was decided on a heavy strip and she was a sharp third August 13 at Hazel Park in the three-quarters mile Dequindre Purse. While the VanBerg duo undoubtedly will come in for a major share of the tote support in the Rock X,lit will be necessary that each turn in a top performance to achieve victory. In the field named to oppose the VanBerg pair are such good ones as River Downs Stock Farms Irish-bred Bay Bloom, 120; Mrs. V. E. Smiths Etelka, 106; Great Northern Stables Lundi, 120; Glolite Stablos Witch Way, 111; Mrs. George C. Whites hard-hitting Princess Trace, 112, and Dorchester Farms Careless Jones, 111 pounds. With the single exception of Careless Jones, tho remaining members of the Rock X probable starting band are well known to Motor City racing followers. Although unable to reach the winners ring in three previous jstarts this year, the Dorchester Farm representative scored in eight of 17 starts in 1952 while engaging good class company. Jockey Howard Craig, successful with five mounts here yesterday, will ride Careless Jones in the Rock X. VanBerg, Columbus, Nebr., horseman, also will saddle an entry for the Jockeys Guild Purse, and his charges certainly hold royal chances for top honors in the eight-furlong test. Mock Battle, 114 pounds, is always dangerous at the distance, and Big Hearted, 107 pounds, recently beat a good field in the one-mile Grand River Purse. VanBerg announced this morning that jockey Craig will be astride one of his representatives in the co-feature attraction. Dorchester Farm Stables silks are to be carried in the Jockeys Guild by Daiquari, who shipped in last week from Randall; R. A. Parachek will.rely on Little Doc, a good class winner at the MRA meeting this year, and J. C. Ferrara is starting the improved But Why. Thomas McDermotts Hurry-Skurry and D. and H. Stables Meg March complete the likely Jocekys Guild Purse starting band. The apprentice allowance was claimed for Daiquari and Little Doc, and youthful Don Holmes, presently tied with jockey Craig in the local riding standings, will be at the reins on one of those entrants. Best supporting numbers on tomorrows card are the one-mile fifth and the one-mile and three furlongs "nightcap" offering. Three-year-olds and upward are to contest the secondary offerings, and Papa Bear, Kontinu and Newark Pride are expected to go well in the sprint, while Pro, Buongiorno and Redeal may draw the bulk of support in the long-distance race.
