Browns Tip White Sox, 4-3; Snap Pierces String at 40 The St. Louis Browns exploded Billy Pierces string of scoreless innings with two runs in the sixth today and went on to defeat the slim southpaw with two more in the 10th for -a 4 to 3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Pierce shut out the Brownies for five innings to extend his string of scoreless frames to 40, before Roy Sievers and Don Lenhardt hit consecutive doubles for the first run of the game. Johnny Groth, St. Louis center fielder, was hit on the left temple by one of Pierces fast balls in the sixth and fell to the ground unconscious. He was taken to a hospital for X-rays. . The main force of the blow was deflected by a protective cover under his cap. He was said to have suffered a slight concussion.
