Sundowner Heads Beverwyck Chase McHugh FencerWillTake On Sun Shower and Six Others In Saratoga Feature Event SARATOGA, Saratoga Springs, N. Y., Aug. 19. -The New York Turf Writers As-Handicap will have its fifty-fourth running at Saratoga tomorrow. Thus far, the chasers have provided the best sport of the meeting," along with a couple of the biggest surprises and the eight named to dispute this edition of the Beverwyck at about two miles are a well-matched group. James F. McHughs Sundowner, who finished second in the Shillelah and North American Steeplechases here, beaten by Sun Shower and The Mast in two notable upsets, will again be a strong choice tomorrow. The Mast is not in the Beverwyck, while Sun Shower followed his good race in the Shillelah with a more characteristic bad one in the North American. Earl Phelps will again ride Sundowner, who jumped considerably better with a change in equipment last out. Raymond R. Guests Virginius, a steadily improving young fencer; Brookmeade Stables His Boots, and Mrs. V. G. Cardys Sun Shower finished in that order behind Sundowner in the North American. Vir-1 ginius was beaten only two and a half lengths by the likely favorite and would need only a little improvement to turn the tables. Tommy Field will again ride Jack Skinners charge. Others Slated to Compete The others in the Beverwyck are L. H. Nelles Extra Points, F. Ambrose Clarks Ben Tally-Ho, L. W. Jennings Mighty Mo and M. B. Metcalf, Jr.s Beaupre, who have little to recommend them. Extra Points flashed fine form in moderate company at Belmont Park, but comes from dull races at Delaware and Monmouth. Last year he was beaten in a claimer here at the Spa by Sun Shower, but he will have the services of Frank "Dooley" Adams, the leader of the jumping riders. Ben Tally-Ho is an impetuous and inexperienced fencer, but is capable of causing a surprise if there is to be another such. Scotty Riles will be in the saddle. Mighty Mo finished behind Ben Tally-Ho last out. The best of tomorrows flat races is the ,000 Plattsburg Purse at a mile and a furlong. C. V. Whitneys Mameluke, winner of last years Metropolitan Mile, is slated to return to action in this event and has been training creditably after a long absence. The Ogden Phipps entry of Ancestor and Bassanio is sure to receive considerable .support here, while Warbern Stables Sickles Sound, who was used up forcing the pace of Combat Boots last out, is favorably placed under as close to 105 pounds as Ted Atkinson can get. If his usual closing rush is saved tomorrow, he may be the one to beat.
