QUITE FANCY could not stay with the winner in the late stages but outfinished RETA RUN. The latter was hard pressed for the lead and weakened. BERNICE W. raced evenly and without mishap. SHORT BIT caught tired horses, as did COIMBRA. DESERT BREEZE weakened early. SMALL COFFEE was outrun, as was WOOD WITCH. WEE BERN quit. VERY ULTRA was shuffled back on the turn. The latter wrested comman from LITTLE KRAUT early, set a good pace and fought it out gamely. GOOSE BAY weakened in the fin? drive. OLD SHOE gave way badly and bobbled at the fourteenth jump. EXCURSION, under restraint to midway of the final turn, was taken up sharply while lacking room entering the stretch, remained along the inside to drive through and win narrowly over CHAR BOOTS. The latter was under restraint while following the pace, responded to urging and just missed. DIRECT TINT set the pace-under rating and weakened only in the final sixteenth while in a bit close between the top two. ELI COOKIE rallied too late. JET JOY failed to rally. SAM H., cleverly rated, moved to the leader on the final turn, assumed the lead in midstretch under pressure and was kept under a drive to extend advantage. ASCOT assumed a commanding lead in the early part, was under pressure while setting the pace and held on willingly when displaced, CHUSCO, slow to reach best stride, caught tired horses in the final quarter mile. CLASSY CHANCE moved within striking distance after the first mile and failed to menace thereafter. FROM AFAR, prominent in the early stages, weakened. DE SAUSSURE was never a factor.
