poise Mile, Mile, Lassie, Lassie, JUDGES STAND By CHARLES HATT0N ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 23.— This luxurious course on Chicagos green North Side prairie will be the scene of some of Americas most important racing for the next 35 days. During this period Ben Lindheimer will present such significant events as the Classic, Arlington Arlington Handicap, Handicap, Futurity, Futurity, Equi-Stars Stars and and Stripes Stripes and and the the Modesty. Modesty. poise Mile, Mile, Lassie, Lassie, Arlington Arlington Handicap, Handicap, Futurity, Futurity, Equi-Stars Stars and and Stripes Stripes and and the the Modesty. Modesty. Equipoise These and other of the 15 stakes will bring together the championship pretenders, with almost no exceptions, and it is clear their results will be relevant to the final standings. Especially since Arlington this season, more than ever before, becomes the disputed territory for the sports outstanding developments from Coast to Coast. For example, the Classic on July 17 has sometimes, in past renewals, served principally as the vehicle of showing Chicagoans an established three-year-old leader, as in the instance of Native Dancer a year ago. But each of the "Triple Crown" events had a different winner this spring, and all three of these, Determine, Hasty Road and High Gun, are eligible for the local mile. AAA On the West Coast they are fond of calling Determine the champion. Here in the Midlands, where he was developed, Hasty Road has a large and loyal rooting section. Ond in the East the Peter Pan and Belmont winner, High Gun, has shown steady progress. Though it has been theorized Determine needs to be refreshed ever since before the Derby, it still is possible he will join the other two on Arlington Heights Classic Day. Similarly, the opulent Arlington Handicap, which will gross about 60,000, and the Futurity and Lassie, seem certain to bring here virtually all the best of the handicappers and Arlington Lures Championship Contenders Sport Will Be of National Importance Sir Mango Much Improved in Chicago North Side Course Has Most Escalators two-year-olds, though at the moment they are even less identifiable than the best of the three-year-olds. That is with the single exception of Straight Faces dominion of the seasoned performers. In fine, it appears that Ben Lindheimer s fashion-plated course is on the threshold of its most brilliant meet in many years. AAA One of the most improved horses in training is Sir Margo, who has won three stakes at this meeting, including the 0,000 Lincoln Handicap. This mile and a Bixteenth drew a field of handicappers on the top Chicago level and the son of Gilded Knight was the high-weight under 123 pounds, but he won with impressive elan and in track record time. Very probably, we think, you will hear from him again at fashion-plated Arlington, where he first attracted attention as a two-year-old. The robust brown strikes us as an interesting proposition for the Equipoise Mile and the 00,000 added Arlington Handicap, even though we. expect he is bound to find the competition for these events a bit keener. Harry Eads* homebred is easily the most capable of the progeny of Gilded. Knight, who is by Sir Gallahad in. and was a stakes winner for the Wheatley Stable. As we recall, he stood for a time at John Bell n.s place in Pennsylvania, far off the beaten path of bloodstock production. The Lincoln winner is out of a mare by the French Kantar, who served several years in Maryland and, like Gilded Knight, did not enjoy the best of opportunities. It is extraordinary how bloodstock breeding sometimes does the exceptional, flouting all the dictates of fashion to produce a really worthwhile horse from an unexpected quarter, as in the present instance, and that of Sickles Image. The odds are better pursuing the laws of average, but it still sometimes happens that there is what is called a "sport," and it is such performers encourage the small breeder of the sort who find the "name" stallions inaccessible. AAA Arlington is by no means the only modern course having escalator service, and indeed this mode of transportation is rapidly becoming a "must" at all plants. But it has more of them than any of its contemporaries, with a battery of 16 sparing the patrons the necessity of climbing stairs to reach any of the vast stands five levels. These are augmented by roomy elevators. At the entrances are escalator units of 48 inches, the others being 32 inches wide, and two are so situated as to make visiting the paddock area more convenient. They were installed by the Otis Company and work on them began as long ago as last November. Completion of the task in May established something of a record. As many as 56 men were employed in their installation at one time and it required 37 freight cars and more than 100 vans just to move the materials, so that it was something of a-project. At most courses having escalators, they are concealed or behind walls, but Arlingtons are very much in the open. This affords freedom of movement and prevents any unnecessary crowding at the inlets or outlets. We are told that Washington Park also will have escalator service this season, the club having installed seven in the South Side plant.
