Caboose Driving Victor at Delaware Beats Requisition In Closing Strides Latter Saves Runner-Up Honors Despite Breaking Down Just Before Finish By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 23. — Anita C. Heards Caboose scored a driving victory in the Montchanin Handicap No. 4 as William Ziegler, Jr.s Requisition saved second money despite breaking down badly within breathing distance of the finish. He was beaten just a half length and was slightly more than that distance ahead of George K. Murdochs Blimey. Even in defeat. Requisition sent his scoring for the series to 72 points, thus assuring him of top money in the special ,500 award made following the completion of the series. Caboose, making his initial appearance in the route-running handicap series, was ridden by Karl Korte and drove to the end of the mile and a half in 2:33%. His backers in the crowd of 12,542 took down a 3.60 return on each investment. Non-starters in this running — Winlochan Stables Adopt and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Biloxi — remain in second and third positions in the standing with* 36 and 27 points, respectively, while Blimey moved into the fourth spot tie with Caboose with 24 points. Requisition, who had previously w o n both the mile and one-eighth and mile and one-quarter runnings, led until almost the finish while receiving a perfectly judged ride from Willie Lester. It was not until the final several yards that Lester was forced to rouse Requisition in an effort to stave off the bid of Caboose. The urging evidently was more than Requisition could stand, for he stumbled and almost fell over the line. May Have Fractured Sesamoid Lester dismounted less than a sixteenth of a mile past the finish line and Requisition was removed from the track in the horse ambulance. Following an examination, the veterinarian reported that there was every indication that the Ziegler horse had suffered a fractured sesamoid and a torn sheath. There remained a possibility that the son of Requested— Generva M., could be saved for breeding purposes. Form players received a setback, in the six-furlong Plucky Maud Purse, Mrs. Samuel M. Pistorios Singing Beauty failing by a nose after being backed into one-to-two favoritism. The winner, under an excellent ride by Joseph A. Regalbuto, was Cary C. Boshamers Late Model, who was timed in 1:11%. There was a gap of almost five lengths back to the third finisher, Alan T„ Clarkes Jeannie C. Late Model, a War Jeep four-year-old, was winning her first race in seven attempts this semester and paid 1.80. Doug Smalls Aeschylus, racing under a claiming tag of 0,000, came within four-fifths of a second of the five and one-half furlong track record, held jointly by Pavot and Northern Star, when he scored a seven-length victory in l:05ys in the fourth race. Pete McLean sent the Orestes III. youngster to the lead at once and steadily widened on the opposition to return 5.20. Arnold Hangers Rico Casino was second over G. M. Cohens Chuck Thompson, who raced coupled with Saggy Farms Sagmon. Barclay Stables Prabeau, a daughter of Alibhai who brought 2,500 as a yearling, made her debut in the days opener and easily made good by three arid one-half lengths after-being backed into .60 favoritism. Her time for five and one-half furlongs under Norman Cox was 1:06%, with her closest pursuers being Mrs. Frank Moons Quite Fancy and Blue Stone Farms Reta Run. The Daily Double return on Prabeau and Mrs. Dorothy N. Lees Sans Egal was 47.60.
