Y., June 23.— Displaying a decided fondness for the prevailing sloppy strip, Sidney Jacobs Right Down scored an impressive victory in the Tremont Stakes here today. The two-year-old colt, who had met with his first defeat in four previous starts in the Cherry Hill Stakes, first had to withstand a claim of foul lodged by jockey Ted Atkinson, rider of Wheatley Stables favored Dark Ruler before being declared the official victor. Akinson alleged that the winner carried his mount out on the turn, but after a review of the films, the stewards decided that the mishap had no decided effect on the eventual outcome and honored the original placings. Right Down reached the end of the five and one-half furlongs event three parts of a length before Jack W. Schiffers Blackway, who was a head before Dark Ruler. One and one-half lengths farther back came Anthony J. Ferraras Lenny Gale, who had set the pace to the furlong marker before faltering. Bred by New York Commissioner Right Down, who was shipped to the Metropolitan sector from New Jersey for the Tremont, was bred by William C. Lang-ley, a member of the New York State Racing Commission. Langley bred the sturdy son of Knockdown and Right Off at his farm in Virginia and sold the youngster to Jacobs when a yearling for an undisclosed sum. Todays victory added ,925 to the gleanings of the gelding, who now has amassed 7,300 in four successful starts. The Tremont grossed 3,600, with 10 starters. Jockey Jim Nichols was astride the Jacobs representative, who required 1 :05% to sprint the distance in the wet footing. Somewhat overlooked in the wagering, the winner paid 3.40. Right Down shouldered equal top weight of 122 pounds along with Silver Rab and Lenny Gale. The victor is one of the few members of the Tremont field not nominated for the Great American Stakes, to be decided here next Wednesday. Heavily overcast skies and intermittent thunder showers failed to daunt the spirit of the 16,086 enthusiastic persons in attendance. The racing strip was transformed Continued on Page Fifty-Two Right Down Wins Tremont On Sloppy Aqueduct Oval Sidney Jacobs Juvenile Forced To Withstand Claim of Foul Continued from Page One into its sloppy condition following overnight rains in the Long Island area. Lenny Gale was the first to show in front as the Tremont group left the gate followed by Free Stride, Right Down, and Shimke. Lenny Gale stepped to a slight lead over Right Down several strides from the gate as Dark Ruler, who broke in the first flight surged up on the outside to enter contention. Lenny Gale continued "on the lead" around the turn as both the eventual winner and the favorite raced in close pursuit. Going into the final turn Right Down drifted out slightly taking Dark Ruler with him, but Nichols straightened" his mount as quickly as possible in order not to impede Atkinson and Dark Ruler. Curving into the long stretch Lenny Gale remained diligently at the task before him, but began to shorten stride as the furlong marker came into view and it became apparent that he would be unable to withstand the bids of several of -his rivals. As the leader continued to tire Right Down moved up boldly on the outside to gain a slight advantage as both Dark Ruler and Blackway started to move. Slightly inside the stretch the early leader signified he had had -enough and Right Down started to draw clear as Nichols braced his mount for the challenges that were sure to come. Blackway moved into the runner-up position after saving some ground and both he and Dark Ruler set sail for the leaders. Right Down possessed the necessary stamina however, and went under the wire with a safe advantage. Blackaway gradually was wearing down the winner as was-the favorite, who most likely would have been the winner in several more strides.
