Detroits Michigan Mile Track Mark Is in Danger 0,000 Feature on July 10 Has White Skies Among Nominees DETROIT RACE COURSE, Iivonia, Mich., June 23.— Severity-eight thoroughbreds have been nominated to run in the 0,000 added Michigan Mile at the Detroit Race Course on July 10, and the probable ! starting field indicates that a track record is in danger. Marion H. VanBergs Son Charlie sped the mile in 1: 37 at the Detroit Race Course four years ago, a mark that still stands. To take just one horse in the bulky field who has a chance at smashing that record — theres White Skies. White Skies recently carried 136 pounds and pushed his conqueror to equaling the Garden State 1:09 record for six furlongs while packing 30 pounds less than White Skies. Most experts rate White Skies the finest sprinter in the nation. Another important nominee for the Michigan Mile is Sickles Image, "Mare of the Year" in 1953. With at least two 1954 races for a tune-up, the six-year-old will be out to close the gap on the 8,000 she needs to break the record for the greatest money-winning mare of all time, now held by Bewitch. A jockey attraction in the Michigan Mile will be Tony DeSpirito scheduled to ride Irving Gushens five-year-old Soldier Son. DeSpirito was an apprentice jockey sensation when he led the nations riders two years ago. He has been campaigning in New England this season. . Other "name" thoroughbreds entered for the mile are Royal Bay Gem, Pomace, Money Broker, Phil D., Chain Reaction, Gulf Stream, Second Avenue, Find, Sea O Erin, Tahitian, Capeador and Mister Black. The list of stables and owners includes Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, Brookmeade Stable, Hasty House Farm, Mrs. J. R. H. Thouron and many others. Theodore D." Buhls Second Avenue won the Michigan mile in 1953.
