Zarathustra, 50-1 Outsider, Surprises in Irish Derby THE CURRAGH COUNTY, Kildare, Eire, June 23. — Zarathustra, 50-1 outsider owned by Terence Gray, staggered the Irish racing fraternity by surging to a one and a half length winn in the Irish Derby at twelve furlongs here today. Irelands 2,660 classis was regarded as near certainty for John McLean, Jr.s Tale of Two Cities, but starting as an odds on favorite at 8 to 15 this Tehran colt was beaten into third spot. Zarathustra, with Patrick Powell, Jr., astride, turned back Mr. E. V. Kellys Hidalgo an 8 to 1 shot ridden by John Power. English jockey Billy Nevett on Tale of Two Cities was another half-length back on the field of 11. Zarathustra, a black colt by Persian Gulf out of the Sansovino mare, Salvia, was gaining his first victory this year. He finished fifth in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas. Trained by Mike Hurley at Ath-boy, County Meath, Zarathustra won three of five starts as a two-year-old. The top-rated filly, Sixpence, now racing in Alberta Ranches colors at Hollywood Park, California, inflicted one of Zarathustras juvenile defeats.
