Y., June 23.— The Bannockburn Handicap for three-year-olds and over at six furlongs is the salient offering Thursday. This event for the sprinting brigade could easily be called a preview of the Carter Handicap to be decided later in the meeting. The Bannockburn, named for a good horse of other years, attracted a field of 13 of which seven are eligible for the Carter and its wealthy endowment of 0,000 to be decided on Monday, July 5. The Carter, it will be recalled, gained national if not world-wide fame as the setting of a triple dead heat_in which* Brownie, Bossuet and Wait A Bit, racing respectively for Joe W. Brown, the Belair Stud and William J. Ziegler, finished on even terms a decade ago, or on June 10, 1944 to be exact. Those of tomorrows preview eligibles for the Carter are Squared Away, Mr. Midnight, Hilarious, Jet Master, Caesar Did, Social Outcast and Hyphasis. The non-eligibles are Real Brother, Peter Lane, Belluno, Nullify, Giorgetti and Combat Boots. In addition to the Bannockburn, the Amagansett Hurdle Handicap over the mile and three-quarter distance is down for decision. This event, one of the highlights of that branch of racing, carries a purse value of ,500 and brings together eight of which Neji and Hyvania race as the Phipps-Bostwick entry and Oneida and Templier- as the Sanford Farm entry. Named in the overnight list is Extra Points, the "standout development of the year in the field events. This fellow is asked to shoulder 161 pounds and under the assign- ment will essay to concede weights from 10 to 23 pounds to his opposition. Course Softened by Rains The Steeplechase faction, of late, voiced objections to the hard surface, of the local course due to the, lack of water and rain, but on this score tomorrow, have no complaints. The rains which visited here during the night and morning softened the course and refreshed the faded grass to its pristine like greeness. The hurdle race scheduled for today failed to attract the required quota of starters and as a result was declared off. This was due directly to the hard surface. • The sprint offering which is under handicap conditions, classified, closed on Tuesday with 16 nominations of which three were declared. The top weight of the field is Hilarious, from the Wheatley menage, with 122, and next to him is Squared Away, owned by Mrs. Jan Burke, with 120. There is a sharp drop from these two speedsters, down to 115 on Real Brother.- Grouped under the 113-pound assignment are Social Outcast and Hyphasis, 110 on Belluno, 109 on Caesar Did, Jet Master, 108; Peter Lane and Combat Boots, with 107;. Nullify, 105, and Giorgetti, 102. There is a wealth of speed in this contest and under the weight span, anything could happen. The probable overnight choice appears to be the entry trained by the veteran "Mr. Fitz," the Wheatley and Belair Stud representatives, Hilarious and Hyphasis. Second to them in estimation is Real Brother and with Social Outcast accorded support while Peter Lane and Belluno will hot lack adherents. These estimates are based on recent performances, especially a meeting between Hilarious and Real Brother in a race won by Mr. Turf. There is for tomorrow a shift of five pounds in favor of the Wheatley stable representative from the earlier meeting and this tips the scales in popularity with the figure men. However, in a race wherein speed is the main element, there is always present, racing luck and track conditions. Aqueduct for tomorrow, basing probabilities on a fast track and clear skies, the surface dries out rapidly, presents little trouble on that score. Post positions from the six-furlong start can and frequently does pose a problem. Horses breaking from the outside are frequently at a disadvantage, when horses of equal speed break from the inside. This is somewhat the case tomorrow and the problem is one of lost ground at the turns which in the greater number of instances is the difference between winning and losing. The hurdle race is a meritorious one and despite his impost, Extra Points looms up as the best hazard. He is by far the steadiest fencer developed this season and appears capable of completing the task. Extra Points has sufficient speed to remain in ■lii-Btmtifln-aihils husbanding his
