Happy Memories Draws Away in Bombay Purse Leads Deck Cherry, Snubbed and Pie Bed to Wire at ThistleDown By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 23.— Disposing of Snubbed on the final bend Mrs. Arthur Hullcoats Happy Memories drew clear through the stretch to win by three and a half length in the Bombay Purse here at ThistleDown: Ernest H. Lanes Deck Cherry was along to gain second money by two lengths over the sec- I pond choice, Myron Hamars Snubbed. The favorite,-W. J. Sprow, Jr.s Pie Bed, was fourth another five lengths back in a dull effort. Happy Memories, a homebred son of Lochinvar — Fijord, was winning for the second consecutive time over this track and now looms as one of the choices in next weeks ,500 added Endurance Stakes. Happy Memories was nicely ridden by Charles McKee and as a team were timed in 1:05%, for the five and one-half furlongs. The winner paid 0.80. The weather here was ideal for the sport and a good crowd of over 6,000 turned out for the nine races. Happy Memories moved through to gain the lead soon after the start with Snubbed second and Texas Plains in third position. Deb Talk, Deck Cherry, Pie Bed, and the Cuban Amnistiada completed the field. Snubbed moved to a head of the winning colt on the turns and appeared the most dangerous at that point. Pie Bed, turning in a dull effort, was still next to last. Happy Memories responded to McKees urging in early stretch and at the furlong marker had drawn away from the persistent Snubbed by one length. Deck Cherry was now a closer third while in the middle of the strip and Pie Bed was now fourth along the rail, but not going anywhere. The winner increased his advantage through the late stretch while being mildly urged by McKee and Deck Cherry was up to best the Hamar standard bearer for the place money. The association had to refund over 7,-000 in the fifth race when the heavily backed Choice Syl Richs Sinister was injured in the starting gate, and had to be withdrawn. Ed A. Bischoff s Dark Embassy won the race by a length with Profizano second and Hy Front, third, another three parts of a length removed at the end of the six furlongs. With the pools refigured Dark Embassy wound up as the heavy favorite and paid .00, being timed in 1:12. Paul A. Ward, who is now making a runaway of the jockey race was scoring for the second time this afternoon while astride Dark Embassy. Courtney Burtons Ferro, making his first start of this meeting, finished second to Wilmer C. Ensors Amawalk in the fourth race with J. Burns Celandine coming third another neck back at the end of the six furlongs. Amawalk veered in badly and bothered Celadine about 70-yards out for which he was disqualified and placed third moving Ferro into the number one slot. Amawalk was ridden by Joe Servis. Ferro was nicely ridden by Paul A. Ward and paid 6.60 being timed in 1:12 flat over the fast track. Amawalk and Ferro made the pace along the backstretch with one and then the other showing in front. Celandine was allowed to settle into best stride by Bowcut. Entering the stretch, Celandine started to move along the inside and had plenty of room as Amawalk and Ferro were well off the rail while racing heads apart. A sixteenth out it appeared as though Celandine would catch the pacesetters and then Amawalk suddenly bore in and Bow-cut had to take up sharply with his mount. Ferro was running at Jamaica this spring in ,000 company. He broke his maiden at Hialeah during the winter and turned in another excellent race later in the Florida campaign while at Gulfstream Park. E. M. "OHerrons Arthur Itis and Spoonbill Stables Scrutiny were responsible for the Daily Double races and a pay-off of 02.20. Arthur Itis was ridden by Denny Civi-tello and they reached the end of the six furlongs a length to the good of Minuet. Bonrilla, the favorite, ran third another two and a half lengths back. Arthur Itis was overlooked in the wagering and paid 3.60. Scrutiny v/as nicely ridden by the veteran Bobby Strange and worked his way up while on the outside of horses to get up in the final strides to catch Mrs. Love .by a neck.
