Seems Lulu Perez and Percy Bassett, a pair of featherweights, are headlining in a 12-rpunder intended to produce a challenger for for Sandy Sandy Saddler, Saddler, who, who, if if you you remember, remember, i for for Sandy Sandy Saddler, Saddler, who, who, if if you you remember, remember, i ■ ■ ■ ■ m m """ m is s the the champion champion of of the 126-pound class. When Goodman managed to break the hold on his syntax, he said there was a pretty good young heavyweight on the card, kid name of Harold Carter, out of Linden, N. J., where he is a high school senior much preoccupied with book learning when he isnt knocking over assorted antagonists. Goodman, who is Jim Norris Ivy Lee, couldnt remember rightly just how many fights Carter has won without being beaten, but it seemed to him the number was 10 "or something like it." However, Goodman said, its an encouraging sign for promoters that there is a kid like Carter around. "I read it some place— you can steal it because it wasnt in a New York paper — that whos around to beat Rocky Marciano," Goodman orated. "They always say them things. "How was it when Dempsey was around? They said it would have to be a guy with a "left jab who was strong and could box. So a guy came along like Tunney and he was like that. Now theyre saying the guy that beats Marciano has got to be 21 and real strong and with a good jab. "I dont know much about this Carter, but hes good, and they got a kid out in Tacoma, Wash., that is good, too. Hes Pat McMurtry and he isnt Jack Hurleys fighter, but they tell me hes pretty good." ~ The reference to Hurley was gratuitous. Hurley is the thin man who has conquered his ulcers by living with them. He is dour of manner and wise in the ways of the ring. He- is one of boxings better managers, as indicated by the" fine job hes done of getting the most out of Harry Matthews, who isnt much, and Goodmans introduction of his name was provocative. "Whats Hurley got to do with this?" Goodman was asked. "Well, the way theyre building up this McMurtry, youd think Hurley has him. Theyve got him a lot of one-round knockouts for him, which makes you think of the Hurley touch. It doesnt matter how it is, there are young heavyweights around and thats good. "Theres thi Tommy Jackson, hes young, and it shows the heavyweight division is on the rise. Only a year ago, you said whos around. If you had to name the 10 top heavyweights, youd have trouble. Now theres Jackson and this Valdes and . . . gee, I never thought of it. Who are the others. Its just like me and my big mouth." Goodman wasnt totally destroyed, however, and he came right back with Valdes and Cockell, although it was difficult to determine just why he mentioned Cockell, the British don, who is blubbery and slow and an easy target for a puncher like Marciano. "Those guys give the heavyweights international tone," the P. A. said. "Valdes has them Latin-Americans excited and the British go for Cockell. We havent had anything like that in three or four years. Things are really looking up in the class. "This Carter kid Im interested in. Hes fighting in the Garden for the first time and maybe hes the one that will move up to take the title from Marciano, if somebody doesnt do it before him like Archie Moore or Jimmy Slade, if one of them ever get a chance at Marciano. "Hes only a schoolboy, but they say hes got everything, which could be. Hes fighting Bob Golden in an eight-rounder at the Garden. You know this Golden. He was Walter "Good Time Charley" Friedmanf fighter. Too bad Friedman died. Hed bf a big help around here yelling about hfc fighter this week. "Anyway, weve got something to lool forward to, seeing how this kid Cartel does with this Golden. I wont say it, because Harry Marksons got a license t make all the puns around here, but Carter* opportunity is Golden. There, I said it."
