Indians Use Three Homers To Defeat Athletics, 5-2 CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 23 UP.— The Cleveland Indians made only six hits off Bob Trice today but three of them were homers by Larry Doby, Al Rosen, and winning pitcher Bob Lemon which enabled them to score a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics and even the series. The first place Indians derived all of their runs from the homers. Doby banged his 10th behind a walk to Al Smith in the first inning. Rosen hit his 14th after Doby singled in the sixth and Lemon got No. 1 for the season in the seventh, with the bases empty. Lemon allowed seven hits, pitching his best game this month to win his ninth decision against four defeats, three of which came in June. Bob Avila returned to a starting position at second base today for the first time since he retired with a fractured thumb on June 6. He went hitless to reduce his league leading average to ,374.
