Gala Gala Fete Fete Registers Registers in in Fast Fast Time; Time; Dover Dover Lures Lures Unbeaten Unbeaten Royal Royal Note Note HOWARD WELLS Saddled Gala Fete for winning performance in the Marica. Travels Over Six Furlongs in 1:09f Walmac Homebred Turns Back Arab Actress and Good Call at Arlington By J. J. MURPHY ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, HI., June 29. Displaying high speed in running six furlongs in 1:09 here this afternoon, Gala Fete, from the Walmac Farm, sprung a mild surprise in winning the Marica Purse from the well-regarded Arab Actress and the almost equally-well fancied Good Call. With Arnold Kirkland permitting her free rein througout, Gala Fete, a five-year-old mare, scored by one length but was doing her best to retain her advantage as Arab Actress was a fast-going second and Good Call a good-running third." It may be that both would have trimmed Gala Fete had the race been a sixteenth farther. The winner paid .00 in the five-horse field. There was no show wagering on the event. Arab Actress Takes Lead Arab Actress was out of the starting gate on top, with Good Call second and Gala Fete, on the outside, third. Gala Fete got to the front after they had gone a short distance, however, and was four lengths to the good going to the far turn. She increased her advantage to five lengths near-ing the stretch turn and when straightened out for home was still that much to the good. Neither Good Call, who was running second,, nor Arab Actress, who was third, could make any impression until the final 50 yards, then both came fast and gamely, but Gala Fetes early advantage was productive. Bloom and Sally Catbird appeared to be merely "fillers" in the race, while Sherry L who had also been named to go, was withdrawn early. The track was fast and a crowd of 13,597 was in attendance. Following the running of the Marica the skies darkened and a terrific windstorm blew in from the North. Steve Brooks, leading rider at the meet-ing.-steered winners of both ends of a 6.80 Daily Double when he scored with Mrs. Mark in the first and Air Rocket in the second. Mrs. Mark, a two-year-old filly, was making her first start and showed fine speed in disposing of several supposed "goodies," including Alspal, who finished second, and Miss Olympia, who was third. Miss Olympia was favorite and set the. pace, with Alspal in second position, but Mrs. Mark came down the outside in the Continued on Page Fifty-Two Gala Fete Tallies In Marica Purse Travels Six Furlongs in 1 :09 at Arlington to Turn flack Arab Actress Continued from Page One stretch to register. The filly is owned by Greenacres Stock Farm and trained by Mark Leach. She was well backed. Air Rocket duplicated the feat of Mrs. Mark in following the pace of Hoosier Relic until well into the stretch, then going to the front and winning easily. Calorimeter, the favorite, took down third money in the twelve-horse field. The distance was six-furlongs. Baby Tucky, a three-year-old gelding making his tenth start, won his first race in annexing the third. It was a one mile affair and the Buddah Stable gelding was well supported. He had speed from the beginning, but was doing his best at the end to hold Blue Boy, who finished strongly. W. M. Cook was the winning rider. Lovin Lady Scores - The favorite took the fourth race when Lovin Lady came from behind to be the winner. John Adams was in the saddle and as usual he rated his mount in the early running. It seemed as if Lovin Lady might be trapped on the inside at mid-stretch, but Adams steered her to the outside and had her click by a iength from Snow Sox, with Trycalling, who had set the pace in the seven-furlong event, finishing third. Satisfied, ah outsider with apprentice Tommy ONeil up, managed to last to hold the favorite, Cow Town, to a head decision in the fifth, which, was at six furlongs. Fast Buck made most of the pace but bore out on the stretch turn and the best he could do was be third.
