n ; ; : : : " " : A r DeSpirito Vaults Into First Place Among Nations Riders 1952 Leader Has Booted Home 168 Winners From January 1 to June 25 Diminutive DeSpirito Tonys the first name, 1952 American jockey champion, vaults from third place to the top in the 1954 national standings during the period of May 26, through June 25. Tiny Tony, who posted 168 winners since the first of the year through last Friday, displaced Avelino Gomez, the Mexican rider who has led the list since the turn of the year by sensational riding at the Hipodromo de las Americas at Mexico City. During the monthly period mentioned, the other leaders Determine, Robert H. "Red" McDaniel and Andrew J. Crevolin retained their No. 1 positions. The tabulations are compiled each month by Daily Racing Form. Also moving past Gomez was Willie Hartack, the Johnstown, Pa., youngster who has been going great guns in the East, especially at Monmouth Park, where he registered several triples. Hartack had 146 victors. Gomez was shunted to third place with 127 successes. Sammy Boulmetis retained fourth spot with 123 winners, having ridden 19 winners during the monthly period. DeSpirito guided home 53 winners in the 31-day span to take over the lead, scoring a quadruple on a couple of occasions at Rockingham Park. Meanwhile, Hartack was registering with exactly 30 mounts, while Gomez practically was dormant with only four winners. Molter Presses McDaniel McDaniel is being pressed to thq limit by his old Pacific Coast rival, Willie Molter. The latter gained ground during the month and last Saturday morning had 75 saddle successes to 77 for McDaniel. The margin was four as of May 26. Molters most noteworthy and sensational achievement came in the 21,400 Cali-fornian Stakes at Hollywood Park on June 12 when he sent out Crevolins entry of Imbros" arid Determine at odds of 1 to 2 and they came home one-two, respectively. Moreover, the time of 1:41 flat for the mile and one-sixteenth tied the world record set at Golden Gate Fields by Count Speed in 1947 and also cracked the track record by three-fifths of a second. Imbros had run out of the top spot in three previous starts at the meeting and had been expected to set only the pace for his younger, more illustrious stablemate, who had won the Kentucky Derby. But veteran Johnny Longden took Imbros out on top at the start. And he didnt look back until he had crossed under the wire a length in front of Determine. Imbros Californian success," plus a second and two thirds, boosted his position two notches during the month. He now is third to Determine and Correlation, in that order, his earnings being 10,725. Besides Determines second to Imbros, he annexed the Debonair Stakes at Hollywood on June 5 to add 5,100 to his bankroll. He now leads Correlation in money won, 94,900 to 16,975. Correlation was idle for the entire 31-day span. King Ranchs hardy Heliopolis colt, High Gun, prominently sprang into the picture with a smashing Belmont Stakes neck triumph over C. V. Whitneys Fisherman in the 25,100 fixture, June 12. High Guns capital award was 9,000, a new high for the Belmont. The King Ranch three-year-old also tacked on the Peter Pan Handicap at Belmont to his escutcheon and now is fifth in earnings with 36,850. High Guns stablemate, Rejected, was shoved to fourth place by Imbros, the best the former could do being a fourth-place "pickup." King Ranch, mainly by virtue of High JOCKEY ANTHONY DeSPIRITO Guns Belmont performance, took over the runner-up position among the leading money-winning owners, displacing Hasty House Farm, now third. The King Ranch total read 42,875 last Saturday morn. Of course, the victories of Imbros and Determine kept Crevolin atop the list, the California owner-breeders horses now having gleaned 13,180 since the first of the year. On May 26, Crevolins charges had earned 65,950. National leaders follow: January 1 to June 25, inclusive. OWNERS Owner. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Won. A. J.
