U.S. Women Dominate Singles Play Capture All Four s Semi-Final Berths Americas Two Prize Mens Doubles Teams Also Move Up in Wimbledon Tourney By ROBERT MUSEL United Press Sports Writer WIMBLEDON, England, June 29. Uncle Sams merciless maidens, led by little Maureen Connolly, turned the womens singles of the All-England tennis tournament into an All-America show for the seventh straight year today by taking over all four berths in the semi-finals. Miss Connolly, a dainty dynamo who went about her work with the same poker -" faced precision as Helen Wills Moody, heir illustrious predecessor of another golden era, defeated Mrs. Margaret Osborne du-Pont, 6-1. 6-1. She won the match, but could not capture the hearts of the crowd, which cheered every good move of the loser. In the only upset, Betty Rosenquest Pratt, of South Orange, N. J., who now: lives in Jamaica, B. W. I., defeated third- seeded Shirley Pry, of Akron, Ohio, in a bitterly contested match, 6-4, 9-11, 6-3. Doris Hart, of Coral Gables, Fla., breezed to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Helen Fletcher, of England, while Louise Brough scored a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Angela Mortimer, of England. Trabert, Seixas Win Americas two prize mens doubles teams also advanced to the semi-finals of their division, setting up a U. S. vs. Australia showdown. Tony Trabert, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Vic Seixas, of Philadelphia, first completed a 5-7, 6-3, 10-8, 6-3 victory over Britains Tony Pickard and Roger Becker in a match interrupted Sunday because of darkness. Then they scored a 6-1, 4-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 quarter-final triumph over Mark Otway and Jeff Robson, of New Zealand. Budge Patty, of Los Angeles, and Gard-nar Mulloy, of Coral Gables, Pla., peached the semi-finals with an 8-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hugh Stewart, of Pasadena, Calif., and Armando Vieira, of Brazil. The two Aussie pairs that advanced were top-seeded Rex Hartwig and Mervyn Rose and third-seeded Lew Hoad and Ken Rosewall. Wednesday, in the mens semi-final, top-seeded Trabert meets Rosewall, ranked No. 3, in the feature match, while Patty, No. 7, opposes the veteran Jaroslav Drobny, of Egypt, No. 11. The 19-year-old Miss Connolly from San Diego, Calif., who is shooting for her third straight Wimbledon title, will play Mrs. Pratt on Thursday, and second-seeded Miss Hart will play third-ranked Miss Brough in the other match. Todays quarter-final results assured the U. S. of the Wimbledon womens crown for the eleventh straight tournament, including two before World War n. It marked the eighth All-America womens singles semi-final in the nine tournaments since the war.
