: New Jersey Report By FRED G ALIA NT Batontown to Contest Carter Cap Track Golfers Tourney on July 25 Honor Old Monmouth Park Veteran MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 29. Nothing is swifter in the world than rumor, especially of a tragic vein, as was was amnlv amply Droved proved ves- was was amnlv amply Droved proved ves- yesterday. The echoes of the shots fired in the Delaware Park paddock, where Fred Hammer wounded his estranged wife, could hardly have died down when it was heard about here. But like all rumors, it grew in grotesque proportion, so that, an hour after the the event, event, the the reDorts reports the the event, event, the the reDorts reports racing through the Monmouth track had the Delaware paddock littered with dead bodies. Both Hammer and his wife, trainer Woody Long, whose brother Jack has the Darby Dan Farm horses here, and the horse itself were supposedly dead. It was an hour or so more before the exaggerated tale could be put to rest. Trainer Eddie Yowell, who was in the Delaw?--e paddock to saddle a horse for the first race, flew back here after the event and was greatly surprised to find a host of horsemen waiting for him for an eyewitness report, which helped clear up the facts. What puzzled Eddie the most was, as he put it this morning, "How they knew I was down in Delaware. I just flew down before the race. The Bo wen family now boasts all daughters with the arrival of twin girls to Mrs. Bowen yesterday at Haddonfield. The popular trainer, better known as "Frenchy," and his wife have two older girls . . . Jim East, whose real first name is Albert will ship Alfred Roberts Eaton-town to Aqueduct to run in the Carter Handicap on Monday, -7ith W. B. Williams going up to do the riding. Eaton-town, although getting on the ancient side, turns in a fireball race at times which can beat the best of horses . . . Angel Valenzuela returned after a one-day trip to New York where he won the Distaff Handicap in an upset on R. S. Howards Mabs Choice. Golfers of the Jersey race track fraternity get their second chance at some prizes when Monmouth holds its third annual tourney at Tony Honadis Homestead Country Club, in Spring Lake, on Sunday; July 25. The Calloway system will prevail as usual, with prizes awarded for the low gross and win, place and show in divisions of the handicap. Seventy-one players competed last year and a bigger turnout is expected this season. Jim Devlin, who handles the tournament on this circuit, is at the reins again. Starter Eddie Blind, who was injured in a gate mishap the other day, is bemoaning his fate because he is unable to sharpen his golf game. The mutuel department swept the Garden State tournament and will be out for a repeat. Bill Charles, Jr., burdened down with stakes books from Randall Park, is lightening the load by distributing same for the Cleveland track. He will leave for Rockingham in a few days on the same assignment. . .The third race Monday honored Henry Porter Robinson, a link with the old days at Monmouth Park. Robinson, 85 years old, attended the races back in 1887 but it was a long time between visits. Sixty-seven years later he made another trip to the track, when he came yesterday. A graduate of Princeton University, class of 1891, he preferred to talk about college baseball of those days and of a trotting horse he owned years ago. Ira Hanford will, travel to Delaware to ride Mrs. Marion OConnors La Corredora in the New Castle Handicap Monday... Dave Gorman will pilot C. V. Whitneys Cold Command in the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct. . .Frank Smith cancelled his mounts after the second race yesterday when his shoulder pained him. The apprentice broke his collarbone in Florida this past winter and it has been bothering , him at times. . Gurnee and Charles Munn, of Palm Beach, Fla., were visitors yesterday. Trainer Al Pupino will bring Clearwater Stables Royal Coinage, who impressed with a victory in his lone start, . back here after Wednesdays running of the Great American. Royal Coinage is in both the Tyro and Sapling Stakes here. Jack Skelly who pilots Royal Coinage, will also return Thursday...
