1 ! - : Run Select Handicap in Two Divisions at Monmouth Park Errard King and Artismo t Resume Careers in Their Respective Ends of Stake By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 29. James Cox Bradys Artismo and Joseph Gavegnanos Errard King resume their interrupted 1954 campaigns here tomorrow as highweights in their respective divisions of the 0,000 added Select Handicap. The six-furlong test attracted a total of 21 participants with Artismo to head a field of 11 under 124 pounds in the half designated as the seventh race, and Errard King to top his 10 adversaries under 123 pounds in the group placed as the sixth race. Both are. expected to be outstanding favorites, but Errard King probably will be installed at the shorter odds of the two. He will be ridden by Sam Boulmetis, while Dave Gorman drew the assignment on Artismo. Among 1953 Juvenile Leaders The performances turned in by the two highweights will be a point of interest throughout the country. They were considered among the leading juveniles of the land last year, and many experts still look to them to provide a challenge to the foremost members of the sophomore ranks now that they are returning to action. Artismo, a bay colt by Goya n. Ky. Flash, by Sun Teddy, won 25,500 in 1953. He captured the Sapling, Grand Union Continued on Page Fifty-Two Select Handicap In Two Divisions Errqrd King and Artismo Resume Careers in Their Respective Ends of Stake Continued from Page One Hotel and Hopeful Stakes, and finished second in the Tyro and Belmont Futurity Stakes. Trainer Robert Lee Dotter has started him but twice this year, and both were disappointing efforts that caused him to give the colt a refresher course. He has been going through his paces well in recent weeks and climaxed his preparations for the Select with a handy spin of three furlongs in :35, which he turned in company with the older Landlocked yesterday morning. Errard King, a bay colt by Errard Darby Dover, by Burgoo King, was a sensational speed merchant last year and he amassed 17,700 in purses. His triumphs included the Tyro Stakes, in which he . e-feated Artismo; the Longport Handicap, the Worlds Playground Stakes and the Pimlico Futurity. His only really poor race was in The Garden State when he apparently was not capable of handling the longer distance. He started twice this spring and won his last, the Experimental Free Handicap, in sparkling style over! Fisherman and Quick Lunch. i Errard King then was taken out of training due to a quarter-crack, but trainer Tom Barry has had him steadily coming back since the Garden State Park meeting, and he has turned in a couple of good six furlong moves over the local strip. He was given a half-mile warmup this morning, going in :49, handily. Blessbull New England Sensation M. Sims Blessbull has been a speed sensation in New England this spring,, and he will be pitted against Errard King in the first division. The Bless Me gelding has won four of his starts this year, and he recently set a new mile record of 1:35 winning an overnight handicap over Royal Battle at Suffolk Downs. He will be ridden by Norman Mercier at 115 -pounds. Greentree Stables Card Trick also figures well in this first heat. He was beaten off in the Shevlin, but defeated the Shevlin victor, Quick Lunch, in an overnight handicap at Belmont Park, and he was second to By Jeepers in the Ardsley Stakes his last start in 1953. Ted Atkinson will be down from New York to ride Card Trick under 113 pounds. Opposing Artismo in his division is Quick Lunch, who is posted at 116 pounds. The Wheatley Stables Blenheim U. colt is capable of sparkling form on occasion, as shown by his Shevlin triumph in which he beat Revolt, and Due de Fer in a thrilling stretch duel. Mrs. Louis Lazares Post Prandial, a minor sensation the latter part of the winter -in Florida, will start in this division under 115 pounds. He gave a remarkably poor performance in a prep here last week, and he would need a radical improvement to threaten. Brookfield Farms I Appeal, East Acres Bronze Warrior, Brae Burn Farms War Piper and W. E. Browns Royal Battle are the leading contenders in the second half of the Select. Others in the first division worth consideration are E. M. OBriens Brisuet, Brookfield Farms I Geegee and Mrs. E. D. Jacobs Peter Lane.
