I Two Colonels1 Clash In River Downs Event Roman and Velvet Both Coming Off Fast Winning Performances By W. A. CRUSE Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 29. The most attractive nine-race midweek card of the current session will be presented Wednesday. There are several allowance events, along with claiming events for some of the better sort, and distances vary from five-furlong dashes to one and one-quarter mille routes. While the seventh is the spotlight attraction, the sixth represents a group equally as impressive and it is difficult to ascertain which of the two events will draw the greatest interest among the betting fans. The sixth, an allowance test for four-year-olds and older horses, has a six-furlong setting and a title almost as long as the race. The name of the affair is "The Womens Committee of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra." It is anticipated that the entire group of that organization will be on hand for the running of the race. The seventh is a ,000 allowance affair at five furlongs for two-year-olds and it bears the title of the Seibler Tailoring Co. In the two-year-old affair, for which eight are named, it is difficult to separate S. I. Crews Colonel Roman and W. Neils Colonel Velvet. Though each has a "Colonel." in front of his name they are not closely related. Colonel Roman is by Roman out of Spanish Mom. Colonel Velvet is by Colonel OF dut of Velvet Finish. Their respective recent victories though are almost parallel in the way accomplished. Colonel Velvet won his second straight last time out and in as many starts at the meeting. His first was a six and one-half length verdict over Chanzibar to graduate from the maiden ranks. In that he went five panels in 1:02 over a drying-out track that was classified as "good." The next was a three and one-half lengths decision over S. D. Hinkles Gay Ribbons, with H. H. Prices Easy-Me and K. Burkhardts Lucky V. J. in his wake, and the latter trio is again slated to match strides. His time on a fast track was :59. Colonel Roman made the first start of his career a victorious one and left no doubt of his intentions from start to finish. Capably handled by the veteran rider, Anthony Licata, he was on top at the break and widened his advantage at will to be four and one-half lengths the best of Frisse and Jones Harquin. His times was :59. According to the conditions Colonel Continued on Page Twenty-Fight Two Colonels Clash In River Downs Event Roman and Velvet Both Coming Off Fast Winning Performances Continued from Page Three Roman is picking up but one pound over his weight for his one victory and Colonel Velvet is burdened with four more than in his second victory. The major laurels will undoubtedly rest between the" two. The field for the seventh includes Mrs. T. W. Cochrans End Zone, the Del Faro Stables Cloudy Day, H. M. Simpsons True to Me, Mr. and Mrs. P. Maxwells Blue Errard, F. W. Doods Foxy Sun, William Wells Grand Cella and Mrs. B. P. Hayes Circuit Judge. Blue Errard flipped in the gate Saturday but had been extremely well regarded in the wagering. The four-year-old Errard gelding has had but five outings this year and has a wealth of early foot, and the last outing was the most disappointing after the bad luck at the gate. Grand Cella has been campaigning with some of the best on the grounds and has three wins to his. credit this year. He finished a worthy second to W. Chapins Gray Battle in the Miami Gardens Purse here last Wednesday. The winners time was 1 : 11 and while two and one-half lengths behind that one Grand Cella did have a length on such as C. Deans highly consistent Jr. Ireland; .
