The Tretta Purse at a mile and H one-sixteenth headlined this afternoons H program at ThistleDown, and one of the largest week-day crowds of the meeting, H 5,622, turned out to view the sport in ideal H weather. H The Leslie Jane Stables Shamrock, Mnicely ridden by Bill Carstens, scored a Hpopular neck tally over Thorncliff Farms Mkock Cottage and jockey Ralph Root. Third, another six lengths back, was Mcharley Everitts Wismo, with Tin Twist Kourth, another length removed. Shamrock, as usual, was well off the pace Hnost of the trip, not making a move until Khe field had swung into the far turn. Shamrock was the top-heavy choice and naid .20, being timed in 1:45, two sec-Bnds over the track record, fl Country Gossip and Jack .Kenny went Continued en Page Fifty? Two. Carstens Steers Shamrock To ThistleDown Triumph Scores Popular Neck Tally Oyer Rock Cottage; Wismo Runs Third Continued from Page One out and set the early pace as the field streaked along the backstretch. Shamrock, as expected, was far back in fifth position followed by Wismo and another late beginner, The Gink, from the Brown Hotel Stable. Jack Kenny put Country Gossip away as the field raced into the far turn and Rock Cottage now making a bold bid from the outside moved to a head of the pace with Shamrock now on the extreme outside and literally flying. The Gink was also moving up and was fourth another half length in arrears. Racing into the straightaway, Shamrock moved to the front passing the furlong marker in front by a half length. Rock Cottage was on Shamrocks inside and in closest pursuit with Jack Kenny in third position and Wismo fourth with The Gink, fifth. It appeared as though Shamrock would have made a runaway of the contest through the final furlong, but Rock Cottage and Root had other ideas, and C r-stens had to dig every inch of the way to keep the big gray about his work. Wismo was along to catch Jack Kenny for the show, while The Gink had to be satisfied with fifth place in his initial race over this track this year. Shamrock, was making his fifth Start of the meeting and winning for the first time. In all his races, he showed "a good closing lick, but always managed to fall just short of the mark. This, however, was the easiest field that the Bold Irishman colt has faced in many a day. The sixth race, which served as the secondary feature, was garnered by Mrs. Robert Cramers Charley Foy, his second straight tally over here. He was ridden by Al Widman and they reached the wire three lengths in front of Miss Lakeview, who, in turn, was a half length to the good of the favored Laissez Faire. The winner paid .40, and timed in a speedy 1:11. Charley Foy gained the lead soon after the start and had no trouble at any time, maintaining a clear cut advantage. However, he was being mildly urged by Widman through the home lane.
