Comet Meadow Captures rhirdfairmount Purse Outstays Sky Ranch to Triumph By Head in Maplewood Offering By J. J. HAHN Staff Correspondent PAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111., June 9. — Comet Meadow, a five-year-old ?elded son of Valdina Lamar — Mary Mead-DW, I owned by Dr. C. N. Salerno of St. Louis and ridden by Charles Billeaud, the Erath, La., saddlesmith, won the featured Maplewood Purse here "Wednesday night before 5,157 fans and became one of the many runners to join other "triple-win-ners-at-the-meeting." In registering his third score of the season the bay gelding pad to stand a long drive to outstay the fast closing and unlucky Sky Ranch who races for Mrs. L. Battles and the equally stronger San Andres, representative of G. k. Hodges. Deville, a triple-winner at the meeting knd serving as the public choice, was the pulckest to leave the starting gate and showed in front the first half-mile while the ultimate winner, under double wraps, forced the pace while Sky Ranch and Hope Hull alternated in third and fourth positions. As they reached the head of the stretch the favorite gave way and the ultimate winner went to the front while Sky Ranch was being messed about. However, in the run through the mid-stretch Comet Meadow opened a two lengths lead and appeared an easy winner but after shaking clear of interference, Sky Ranch moved into the runner-up position and San Andres, who had one "horse beat at the head of the stretch, came with a belated rush and moved into fourth place and was lap--ped on the faltering favorite and Sky Ranch. In the run through the final eighth Sky Ranch and San Andres made their charges and at the end Sky Ranch was a head away from going into a tie with the winner and a* length before San Andres. Deville, who pulled up slightly lame, was a pair of lengths to the rear of San Andres and a nose Jiefore Hope Hull, Joeys Dream and Judge Mac were the only other starters. Two-year-olds are to meet in the fourth race, the best of the nine offered here Friday nighf. It is a four and one-half furlongs dash in which several winners at the meeting are entered. Making up the Sprint are Shade S, a recent arrival from the Ohio Circuit, Glad Bulnes, Alma Deck, Channel Guide, Jafran, Bim Bim and the Felix J. Demary coupling of Sweet Sis and Orange King.
