— ■ ; « Shoemaker Draws Suspension; Will Not Ride Swaps Tomorrow Grounded for Rough Riding At Hollywood; Connections Searching for Replacement By OSCAR OTIS HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., June 9. — Jockey Willie Shoemaker today drew a five-day suspension for rough riding in the eighth race yesterday and thereby became ineligible to ride Swaps in the 00,000 Californian on Saturday in which he will meet A. J. Crevolins Determine among others. • . - The suspension, announced shortly before noon today, threw Rex Ellsworths camp into a tizzy, to coin a phrase, and Ellsworth, at the time these lines were written, declared, "This puts a new outlook on things, and Ill have a statement to make to the press as soon as we make up our minds as to what to do." On the Fence as Regards Starting This means that Swaps was at the moment, at least, "on the fence" in regard to starting at scale weight in the mile and a sixteenth Californian against such as Determine, and his official status, as closely as we would gather was that while he wasnt positively in, he wasnt out, either. Loss of Shoemaker was a tremendous blow to Ellsworth because Shoemaker understands the horse perfectly, and has ridden him in all his outings since the Santa Anita Derby. His handling of .the colt, especially in the Kentucky Derby, was masterful. Under ordinary conditions, the signing of another rider to handle Swaps in a race would not be an insuperable problem,, but Continued on Page Forty-Three ! Shoemaker Unable r To Pilot Swaps , Grounded for Rough Riding At Hollywood; Connections s Searching for Replacement ~r Continued from Page One _ a race like the Californian poses special aspects. For one thing, it was to be the first time Swaps was to be asked to step 1 ojit of his age class and meet tough, hardhitting older horses. The dramatic and sudden turn of affairs regarding Swaps rider began in the last race on Wednesday, with Shoemaker aboard the Needmore Stables Silverado. The horse lugged in while taking command in the mile and a sixteenth race, and M*xs disqualified and placed third for the foul. The new placing saw Sunny Khal with Jupiter II., originally third, Roved up to second place. Stewards See Films The board of stewards looked at a rerun of the motion picture film patrol this morning before announcing their decision to suspend Shoemaker for five racing days. [tin, The suspension takes effect with Saturdays racing card. Under the California rules, adopted several months ago, a jockey becomes ineligible to fill any stakes engagements while under suspension. The change was .made as being in the best interests of racing, and was patterned after hhe rules in vogue for many years in New H The turf writers were invited to the pro-» jection room at noon to see the pictures Hand .make their own conclusions. H "It was a clear-cut case, as the pictures Wsrrow," commented senior steward Cassidy, H "and under the rules, we had no alterna-H tiye but to suspend Shoemaker. It was un-H fortunate with such a race coming up as ■ the Californian that the incident occurred, ■but it did occur and that is all there is to Kit. The pictures speak for themselves." V /It was recalled here today that Shoe-K maker figured in a somewhat similar inci- ■ dent in the summer of 1953, when "Shoe" Hw£s signed to ride Robert S. Lytles Corre-latidn, who later at three won the Florida jDerby and Wood Memorial, in a stake in Chicago. Lytle had neglected to name Cor-■•elation for the Starlet Stakes on the prem-Pisc that he was flying to Chicago the night H previous to the Starlet running. Kowever, Shoemaker drew a suspension, nich precluded him from riding, in. the Jdiicago stake under Illinois rules. Lytle ■caftceled the flight and kept Correlation in ■California.
