= Caustic Outgains Searching In Stretch Duel at Belmont Atkinson Whips Phipps Miss To Half Length Triumph as Elenem Finishes Poor Third By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 9. — A pair of former stablemates, Ogden Phipps Caustic and Ethel D. Jacobs Searching, fought out the finish of the featured Sea Cliff Purse here today, with Ted Atkinson whipping and shoving the first-named favorite to a half length triumph. The two leaders drew out seven lengths before Clara L. Ostrikers Elenem at the end of the mile and a sixteenth, while Mary G. Christmas Rosey Miss was 10 lengths out of the money. John M.. Schiffs Royca completed the small field. A heavy favorite with the damp and chilly .throng of 15,567, Caustic paid .30 after getting the distance in 1:43%. The winner is a homebred chestnut three-year-old daughter of Menow from Bellicose, oy Boswell, and was scoring her third straight at this meeting after having been able to win only one" of her six starts last year. Searching, who also raced for Phipps, was purchased privately .by Mrs. Jacobs two races back and gave the favorite a hard tussle after setting all the pace under smooth rating by Bill Boland. While Caustic was closest to the pace, racing on the inside, all the way, Rosey Miss, Royca and Elenem were close at hand for more than half a mile, then began to string out as Atkinson and Boland sat down to drive their mounts turning for home. Responds to Whipping Searching held on to a scant lead until inside the furlong pole, where Caustic responded to Atkinsons steady, rhythmic whipping to gradually edge away. The winner was conceding six pounds to her former running-mate. C. V. Whitneys Aiming High, a dark gray daughter of Mahmoud from Uno Best, by Sir Gallahad m, confirmed her good recent debut by scoring convincingly in the fourth event, a dash for maiden juyenile fillies at fomvand a half furlongs. With Paul Bailey urging her along, Aiming High triumphed by a length over Claiborne Farms Levee, who led George D. Wideners Manihiki by three parts of a length. John S. Phipps Navira, a fashionably bred daughter of Nasrullah from the-grand producer Uvira n, was another length out of the money after breaking in a tangle, then not being abused through the final furlong when it was obvious that she would have to be literally "torn apart" to get to the leaders. Aiming High was the public choice, paying .90 after" getting the distance in a respectable :50%. For the first time within recent memory the infield board showed a 5-to-l favorite in, the fifth event, John A. Morris Jamaica Rose, while Henry Giorgis Smithtown was the same price in lights, but had a few hundred less invested in her chances. They finished eighth and fifth, respectively. Pennsylvania Farms Pipe Dream, ridden by Ray Broussard, won the mile and a sixteenth encounter by almost a length over Sunshine Stables Happy Chap and paid 3.50. The time was a passable 1:44% for ,000 platers. OGDEN PHIPPS — Caustic scored in his colors in the Sea Cliff Purse at Belmont. Park.
