Nashua Nashua Given Given Sharp Sharp Belmont Belmont Trial; Trial; Hi Hi Jet Jet Shows Shows Way Way Home Home to to Lowill Lowill Half Mile in :452/5 On Aqueduct Oyal Mr. Al L Works Out Handy Six Furlongs in 1:12% Over Same Strip; See Field of Eight By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 9.— The Belmont Stakes news emanates from this Queens County Jockey Club course this morning. Belair Studs Nashua, in a move that may. have been intended to reduce the field still further, was sharpened with a half mile "blowout" in :45% with Bill McCleary in the saddle at something like 150 pounds, including the exercise saddle. Before this final prep for Saturdays 00,-000 added mile and a half, trainer Jim Fitz-simmons said that he wanted to be sure that none of the Eastern champions speed had been dulled by his winning race in the Preakness and his subsequent two-mile gallops, Goes Out Five Furlongs in :592/s Nashua must have convinced Mr. Fitz as he ripped off the fractions :11%, :22% and :33%. The big son of Nasrullah galloped out five furlongs in :592/5. Howard "Hash" Weinsteins Mr. Al L., who is a likely starter in the classic, also worked here at Aqueduct this morning, stepping a handy six furlongs in 1:12%, a good move for this son of Stymie. While attending the Fasic-Tipton sales at Belmont this morning, trainer Syl Veitch said that C. V. Whitneys Little Dell had become a definite Belmont starter, but there was nothing to be construed as either Continued on Page Thirty-Eight Nashua Undergoes Sharp Belmont Stakes Workout Clocked Half Mile in :452/s Over Aqueduct Strip; See Field of Eight Continued from Page One optimism or enthusiam in his tone as he made the statement. The other probables for the Belmont are Laudy Lawrences improved Jabneh, Cain Hoy Stables disappointing Flying Fury, Barclay Stables Blazing Count, King Ranchs Retamero and Clearwater Stables Portersville, bringing the field to eight. Two others may come in later this afternoon, though the entries do not close until tomorrow morning. These are Clifford Mooers Traffic Judge and I. J. Collins Smoky Hill, who was acquired for 6,000 from the C. V. Whitney consignment at this mornings sales. Mooers has . been reported somewhere in Mexico and trainer Woody Stephens was endeavouring to contact- him this morning for a final decision concerning the Withers winner. Smoky Hill is fit and sound, appears to want to run all day, and, like Mr. Al L., might have a better chance of getting a minor share of the purse in the Belmont than in shorter and lesser stakes. Eddie Arcaro will be after his sixth Belmont Stakes victory on Nashua. Eric Guerin, who will be after his third straight in the "Test of the Champion," appears to have a slim chance on Blazing count, who recently finished fourth in the Kent Stakes at Delaware. Hedley Woodhouse will ride Jabneh, a son of Bimelech from the stakes-winning Bel-lesouer whose limit cannot yet be measured, his most recent races being easy victories over moderate horses, but ones who have come back with winning races. Hank Moreno, as usual, is to ride Flying Fury, whose race in the Peter Pan is believed to be too bad to be true, while no pilot has been named as yet for Mr; Al L. Ted Atkinson" will ride Portersville, while no rider has been assigned Retamero as yet. The only Belmont Stakes possibilities to do more than gallop at Belmont Park this morning was Flying Fury, who breezed a slow mile on the training track, being clocked in 1:49% over the "good," but deep strip.
