"The response given by horsemen to the third running of The Garden State and the first contesting of The Gardenia is exceptionally gratifying," Donovan said. "It indicates a widespread interest in juvenile thoroughbreds among horsemen, and we feel that running both races over the two-year-old championship distance of a mile and a sixteenth will have a definite effect upon the titles for both sexes. "Our experience in running two-year-old races indicates that the public is particularly attuned to the prospects for juveniles in the fall season because of the bearing they have on the great three-year-old competitions coming up only a few months later," he concluded.
