, . — — , ■•■ Two Events Share Spotlight On Todays Hazel Park Card RICHARD A. CONN ELL — Haze! Park president and his associates were successful in obtaining the Wheeling Downs track in West Virginia. , Australian-Bred Starover Heads Five Sprinters Named For Vacation Days Purse By BUD LYON HAZEL PARK, Mich., June 21.— A brace of features are included in Saturdays nine race program with the Vacation Days Purse for three-year-old and older going as the eighth and the Summertime Purse, for three-year-olds only as the sixth. The Vacation Days drew the smaller field, just five being made eligible, to contest the one mile issue for tne major portion of the ,000 purse, while the Summertime attracted seven sprinters to go after the lions share of the ,000 that six and one-half furlongs test has been endowed with. Second Appearance of Australian Runner The Vacation Days will present the second appearance of the Australian sprint champion, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph D. Greens Starover, who under the conditions will be asked to lift topweight of 117 pounds. Arrayed against this, four-year-old son of Star Kingdom — Mirrilee will be M. H. Van-Bergs Better Goods, Mrs. G. C. Whites Trip Lightly, Lone Pine Stables Black Homburg and D. H. Wells My Night Out. Starover lost a heartbreaker by just a nose to Rock Pilot in his midwestern debut last Saturday in the mile and one-sixteenth Ed McCuan Memorial Handicap while under 112 pounds. Saturdays shorter distance will certainly be of great help to the "down under" colt, for in last weeks test he led his field for all but the final step. The Greens paid a reported 5,000 for the colt this past spring and flew him to Detroit Continued on Page Fifty-Three Two Events Share Top Hazel Billing Australian-Bred Starover Heads Five Sprinters Named For Vacation Days Purse Continued from Page One just 10 days ago from Hollywood Park, where he had been unsuccessful, although he was a winner this past winter at Santa Anita. My Night Out gets his first chance Saturday without having to tangle with Rock Pilot, for in three races this meeting the Phalanx gelding finished second, fourth, and fifth, behind the B. and H. Stable color-bearer and was. quickly caught in a situation that would find him never able to quite cope with that handicap performer. Saturdays test could well be set up perfect for this Cinderella router for he is always away slow and depends upon his extremely fast late burst of speed to run down the leaders in the stretch. Inasmuch as there are some sprinters in this field to go out and test Starover in the early stages it could well be that My Night Out would be the only one to be doing some serious running at the end. Five Winners at Meeting Entered The Summertime Purse has five winners at the meeting in the starting field with one of these, F. JE. Arnolds Andy Jack, having accounted for two in a row and will consequently be placing an unblemished record on the block. Slated to go against the gray colt are: Jack Welchs Royal Blue-jem; T. A. Grissoms Turn Down, Mrs. George C. Whites War Trouble, Dan Logans Will Command, Luther Sheltons Fibre King and Frank B. Holbrooks Riz. Andy Jack won his maiden victory here early this month when he registered a driving victory in a six-furlong dash. The son of Alabama — Stick Fast followed that effort up with a repeat win in a conditioned event at six furlongs and now Saturday will be getting his first real taste of rough competition. Turn Down is definitely the one to beat. The altered son of Revoked turned in one of the fastest six furlongs of the meeting when he registered a nose /decision over Will Command. The Grissom colorbearer was timed in 1 : 13 that afternoon and came from just off the pace to win his local bow. Turn Down was next brought out in a similar test and this time succumbed to Riz while spotting the Holbrook racer eight pounds over a heavy racing strip. At any rate the meeting of -these two again will be watched with great interest for that! winning effort of Riz marked his local debut and again Saturday he will be in receipt of weight, being asked to carry seven pounds less than Turn Down.
