♦ ► Mad Roman Victor In Driving Finish Scores by Length, Quarter After Outgaming Hi Noble In Stretch at ThistleDown By Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, Nor_th Randall, Ohio, June 21.; — A good finish came in the sixth race, the Ferguson Mercury Purse, as a crowd of approximately 5,200 saw Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Barkers Mad Roman outgame E. C. Gott Jr.s Hi Noble through the stretch and draw clear to win by a length and one-quarter. Hard ridden by apprentice Ernest Supiran, Mad Roman garnered his second victory of the meeting and paid 9.20 to win. Hi Noble lasted to save the place position hy a length and one-half over Bill Terry Jr.s Supreme Music. The claiming event for racers entered for ,000 drew eight starters at the distance of six furlongs with favoritism falling to H. W. Wagleys entry of Jimmie M. and Granneal. Jimmie M., considered the strongest of the pair could do no better than gain fifth position, with Granneal finishing sixth. Running time for the event was 1:11%. Thornburgs 23rd Win Jockey Buck Thornburg had his twenty-third winning mount of. the meeting in todays fourth race when he kept G. R. Whites Kind Challa in front throughout the one mile and 40 yards event to score a narrow verdict over Herb Jolleys strongly closing Royal Major. The latter, ridden by apprentice John S. Smith, was a comfortable seven lengths to the good over S. A. Alexanders Gotta Secret. Slightly favored in the wagering, Kind Challa paid .60 after racing the distance in 1:43%. Jockey Dixie D. Mitchell handled Mrs. H. S. Mitchells Questing well for her easy four-length victory in the opening race of the afternoon with the filly paying .60. Leading throughout the six furlongs event, the three-year-old filly combined with J. L. Younghusbands Valley View Farms Mr. Crane, winner of the second race; paying 8.80 to win, to form a Daily Double return of 48.80 for those who had coupled the pair for a 2-3 combination.
