AAA UNEMPLOYMENT DEPT: Pat Gilbert, an actress with no "straight lines," told Henny Youngman shed like to join his nightclub act. "What cn you do?" he asked. "I dunno," she ad libbed, "maybe I could do sort of a strip while youre playing the fiddle." Youngman gave her the glassy ! eye and queried, "Dontcha think maybe the audience might become a little distracted?" Pat shook her head emphatically, "I wouldnt make a sound." AAA HUMAN NATURE: Last year Jane and I I spent a week end at what turned out to be a terrible resort. Our sequence of attitudes [toward the place went like this: July: "I I have never been to such a rats nest in my life. Id never go there again if my life depended on it." — September: "I still cant get over what a mistake we made going to that -joint." November: "Honey, remember that horrible hotel we stayed at?" — January: "I could die laughing everytime I think of that hotel we tried that didnt even have lenough hot water for a shower." March: "Yknow, the more I think about that place the funnier it gets." — May: "It wouldnt Shave been so bad up there if wed planned on roughing it a little."— June: "Honey, why dontcha call that hotel and see if they have any rooms for next week end. Well get away and have some laughs." AAA PENNY ARCADE: The scandal mags may disappear very soon. The lawsuits against them have practically dried up the Lloyds of London libel department which apparently didnt guess right in fixing the price on their premiums. The company took such a beating on the legal fees and settlements that its almost impossible for a scandal magazine to buy that vital insurance coverage today .,Few would dare publish without it. . . . A trade publication tried to make a nice gesture toward a press agent and almost lost him one of his biggest clients. Mike Merrick called "Jhem to place a large ad .for Harry Belaf onte, in which the star thanked the other cast members of "An Island in the Sun" a nice custom in the movie biz.. The mag was so pleased with getting the ad they decided to surprise Mike by giving him a credit line at the bottom of the ad which read: "Management: Mike Merrick," which made it read as though he were taking bows for Harrys success. Happily, Harry has a sense of humor.
