Venomous Heads Line-up for Regret GEORGE C. WHITE— Will saddle Trip Lightly in the Vacation Days Purse and War Trouble in the Summertime Purse I at Hazel Park. Dario Filly Aiming For Seventh in Row Concedes Monmouth Rivals Up to 21 Lbs.; Ephemera! 11. And Happy Princess Threats By WILLIAM C. PIIILLD7S MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 21.— B. A. Darios fleet filly, Venomous, will pick up 124 pounds Saturday, conceding from three to 21 to her 12 rivals in the ninth running of the 0,000 Regret Handicap, a six-furlong run for fillies and mares. The four-year-old daughter of Mel Hash— Spiteful Sue, who was bred by her owner in New England, will be shooting after her seventh straight victory and aiming to keep her 1957 slate clean. In three starts this year she has yet to be defeated and in her fast was an easy winner of the Colonial Handicap at Garden State Park. Despite her weight, the heaviest ever assigned her, Venomous will be a pronounced favorite, at even money or less. Walter Blum, who piloted her to her Colonial score, will be back in the irons tomorrow. Venomous closed out her 1956 campaign with a three-race victory skein and has duplicated that thus far this year. The bay miss gazelle-like speed has long been praised, but the Regret will pose her sternest test, mainly because of her weight. Her opposition is by no means scant, either in quality or quantity. Of the original 19 nominees, a surprising large entry list of 13 went through the box this morning. If all start, the race will gross 3,550 and the winner will gross 5,307.50. Happy Princess Shoulders 1 19 Venomous determined rivals are, in the order of their weights: Mrs. Mabel Lewis Happy Princess, 119; Harford Stables English-bred Ephemeral II., Baylor O. Hickmans Lycka, A. J. Della-Pietras Miss Erlen and Barclay Stables Poll-O-Mine, air 114; Donald Schmecks Jimminetty and Circle M Farms Olympia Dell, 112; Colonial Farms Hello Mom and Fred Meaghers Mares Beau, 111 apiece; Philip Connors* Stolen Hour and Lawrence Jennings Zippy, . 110, with Bernadotte Stables Derry the lightweight under 101. Venomous drew post position number seven. The strongest contenders, who will be breaking from both sides of her, are Ephemeral II., Happy Princess and Stolen Hour. The last .two were second and third to Venomous in the Colonial but both get weight shifts in their favor today. Happy Princess, who will be handled by Ovie Scurlock, won the Champlain for her lone victory of the year while Stolen Hour annexed an allowance race at Laurel. A strong-threat is Ephemeral II., who only made her debut in this country last Tuesday. T he Sorrel streaked along to an. early lead, in fast fractions,, only to drift out in the final strides and be beaten by the 4-to-5 favorite Respond. The mares lone effort was a good one and she indicates she has a turn of speed that will be difficult to duplicate. The five-year-old was purchased at the December Newmarket sales and shipped by boat to this country in January. She was sent to Columbia, S. C, but was in such poor condition that no effort was made J;p train her until the stable returned to Laurel in the spring. Joe Culmone, who rode Ephemeral II. here, gets the assignment again. Lycka, winner of the Betsy Ross Stakes last year, has only started twice this season, without success, but is always dangerous in that she could recover her best form. Miss Erlen comes off a winning race, in which she defeated no lesst a horse than Miss Arlette, and raced extremely well in Florida over the winter. Another pair of recent winners are Poll-O-Mine and Jimminetty, the former triumphing in an allowance test at Jamaica, while Jimminetty captured the Imp Handicap, at ThistleDown. The others in the field are in the outsiders class but that doesnt preclude Continued on Page Fifty-Five Venomous Heads Field For Monmouths Regret Dario Speedster After Seventh In Row; Totes Top Weight of 124 Continued from Page Three them from whining, although such a result would be in the nature of an upset. A few of the Regret candidates got their final blowouts this morning. The overnight favorite went three furlongs in :35% easily, while Happy Princess breezed the same distance in :36%. Two of the lightweights, Derry and Zippy, also were on the track, the former going three furlongs in :35V5, handily, and Zippy in :35. The Regret, which honors the New Jersey-bred filly, the only one of her sex to win the Kentucky Derby, has been won by some top flight mares in its short history. Its roster includes such-swift ones as Cinda, twice Brazen Brat, Evening Out and Blue Sparkler. The Monmouth strip is exceedingly fast and with all the high stepping ladies in the Regret it is quite possible that Decathlons mark of 1:08% may be approached. To shatter it, however, the winner would have to equal the world mark of 1:08%, which j though not impossible, seems very unlikely.
