Small Fields in Two Stakes at Woodbine Canadian Champ Seeks Maturity, As Lyford Cay Goes in Woodstock By FRANK ARMSTRONG WOODBINE, Etobicoke, Ont., June 21.— The fifth running of the Canadian Maturity and the fifty-ninth running of the Woodstock Stakes are the twin features listed on an attractive bill at Woodbine on Saturday. Though the fixtures drew disappointingly small fields of four and five, respectively, there is an interesting prospect of keen competition in each event. The Maturity, fashioned under allowance conditions is 0,000 added, a gallop of a mile and one furlong, and will have net value of 2,885 to the winner. The quartet of four-year-olds qualify as divisional leaders, all of them stakes winners. Considerable rivalry has been built around Canadian Champ, Bill Beasleys colt who until this year had been almost unbeatable in Canadian-bred competition. In the maturity he opposes Mrs. E. P. Taylors Censor and Ben Steens Argent, his conquerors in two of his four starts this year, and Frowde Seagrams Lawday who defeated him in the Durham Cup last year. The appearance of E. P. Taylors Queens Plate winner, Lyford Cay, bi-ightens the small Woodstock field. Gifted with keen early speed, he is not likely to be at any disadvantage at the six furlongs distance. He will likely be an odds-on choice. His contention should develop from Bill Beasleys quick-footed Polynesian filly Pink Velvet, an easy winner in two of her three starts here this year.
